I would only buy 600W for growing trees if I was limited by available power, that said.

Penetration sounds very manly, but what does it really mean?

Is Penetration a laser like quality, meaning more directional?

Or is a 1000 watter just brighter and works better because of lumens?

tek 5 bad boy produces more lumens per watt than a 1000w, and more lumens per watt than a 600w.

But your not going to find many people out yeilding a 600w with a tek5 bad boy? Its that little word "intensity"

I really like T5s, but check your math,

Quantum Triphosphor Lamps•VERY HIGH OUTPUT Lamps: Triphosphor coated Bloom Bulb - 88.Lumen / per Watt

They call them Very High Output but they are only 54 watts.

54 watts is 4752 lumens per lamp.

Hortilux LU600 147 lumens per watt.

You would need 18 lamps to match a 600w HPS.

48" Fluorescent tubes have penetration, because they do not follow the inverse square law. They just are not bright enough to grow trees.

exactly, same thing goes for your 600w

Don’t own a 600W and I’m not suggesting that they be used to grow trees, but they are another tool to grow with like the T5s. In your defense Quantum has advertised that their biggest BadBoy has more available light than a 1000W. I wanted to believe it but after talking to Quantum and doing the math it doesn’t pan out for tree growing.

Have all the respect in the world for DDs and his system, but living in California, the law may change to being limited to 25 square feet not 6 mature plants. So our growing strategy may change to MPB SOG, who knows.

Guys, VHO's are 90 watts not 54. 54 is the HO bulbs, these VHO bulbs put out 7200 lumens each, not 5000..

according to the inverse square law, a (solarmax super hps 95,000 lumens @ 1') 600 puts out 23,750 lumens at 2' (4' centres). a 1000w (solarmax super hps 147,000 lumens @ 1') puts out 36,750 lumens at 2'.

the 1000w penetrates 2', while the 600w penetrates 1' (drop to 10,000 lumens). 1000w will obviously grow larger plants, bigger and fuller buds. imo i'd use 5'-6' centres depending on the size of the plants, and proximity to the bulb.

600w put out about ~2000 btu (straight from PL lighting), while 1000w put out about ~3200 btu.

B.s. in a real world conditions you are looking at more like 4k btu's, but all of this is irrealavent, 1000's have proved themselvs to be better at growing trees, period.

I don't know about all the scientific stuff, all I know is that I run 1000's and 600's and have for awhile, and 1000 watt hps buds are simply larger.. Much larger.

If your looking for advice, don't mess with anything less than 1000 watts. If you think you know different, that 600's are truely better, great! But don't clutter up b-man's grow thread with it :)

Can some mod clean this up? :)

That’s part of the misunderstanding about Quantum's BadBoy T5 lights. They call them VHO but they are 54 Watts. Their reasoning is that their Triphosphor Lamps are some much brighter than normal lamps are after their initial loss of lumens that they should be considered VHO. Fluorescence lamps lose a lot of brightness after a short while but the Triphosphor don’t lose as much.
Triphosphor is a new coating technology for the fluorescence lamps.

Im simply stating that a true VHO blub and there are VHO's out on the market, are 95 watts at 7200 lumens a piece. That being said over 700 watts (A 4 foot 8 lamp fixture) is 57,600 lumens. Probablly awesome side lighs for a MPB setup. LEDS might be better tho..? a 12 lamp is 86,400, probablly produces less heat than the HPS but thats also 1140 watts..

The inverse square law applies to a perfect point source. You’ll find that a HPS lamp is not a true point source; we know this because field measurements don’t match theory. 4’ fluorescence is a line source and HPS is a line source also, just not a very long line source. Inverse square law means that for every doubling of distance you will lose 25% of your lumens. Line source’s don’t fall off as fast. Except when you get to many multiples of the length of the line source away from the light. Maybe because the tube inside the 1000W HPS lamp is longer than the 600W it penetrates more than a 600W. If someone with a meter and a 600W and 1000w lamp took some measurements we could know for sure. At this point I would not be caught dead with a 600W lamp. The first rule of the fight club is not to talk about the fight club.

I can't wait to see some killer tree shots BOSSMAN! :harvest: the MPB system is bad ass... :cool I can't decide between that system and the undercurrent in my day dreams though.

It's gonna be awesome to see you and Lost rock those LED's... :giggle Just be sure to send them LED's and 600's my way if you're not satisfied...

Thanks shady
I got some pics and a vid to post up today. Just gotta go run a bunch of errands first.
I am trying like hell to get down and see lost.
But runnn on 2 to 3 hrs sleep is catching up. Can anyone tell me how to clone myself. I just need one more, LMAO.

I have a light meter and have done the comparisin hat is what made me decide 600's were a waste. I will do them again a right down the exact #'s at each distance.
And post them up. But it will have to wait till light on tommorow.

I am thinking of using the space I left for the additional 2 MPB tub's to sectoin off for the LED test.

Go to a med store when you visit lost...

Hey Hommie, I went under the knife today, so im outta commission for the next few days. I'll see you soon tho!

It's pretty easy. Just cutoff your finger at the knuckle. Dip in some cloning gel. Place in your favorite cloner. After a week or two, a longer if you're a slow grower.

WARNING: Kids Do Not Attempt This At Home.

how would you use this system w/ 1500 watt bulbs .... lets say a 15 bucket system .. would you use the same setup or would you need to use less lights??
