Hello, I'm curious if the Refigerant Recovery Unit being used in a closed loop system can be the type that uses oil in the compressor? I found a cheap RRU, but it does use oil and I want to make sure this won't contaminate anything. Does the Butane contact the compressor oil?

theres no point in running an active closed loop system. recovery pumps are not designed for hydrocarbons.
recovery pumps are ment to be used with refrigerators. thats where they get the oil to keep the internals properly functioning. plus theres an average 3% loss of gases. if dealing with refrigerator gases theres no danger in having an explosion. N-tane has an expansion ratio of 270 gal:1 gal. the fact that we need to keep our pumps oiled to function properly will contaminate the product, the other fact that we dont oil our pumps to prevent contamination will cause build up of thc residue from the tane running through our pumps creating even more friction inside the machine.

and well given the equation of friction + leaking/expanding tane = peace out to life.

although none of what i said is an exact garauntee of what will happen it has happened before to others and will continue to happen.

my recomendation........... stick with passive. its slower but safer

If you are alluding to the dangers of explosion from friction heat, while that is an excellent point and I appreciate you making it, that is not the info i'm looking for. RRU's come as oiled or oil-less, I'm curious if an oiled type RRU is a bad choice to use in a closed loop system due to contamination of the butane to be used over and over or will it not work at all?

it will work except the oil used on the RRU will contaminate the butane. a good way to check forsure is to take a ppm test on the butane after you've ran it through the RRU

There are acceptable and safe hydrocarbon pumps available now. Some extractor manufacturers now off explosion proof pumps that are also oiless! The SAFEST, and HEALTHIEST way to go is to invest in your health and buy a new pump that is suitable for the purpose!

This is the pump Dabzpro Extactors offer:

Explosion Proof Vacuum Pump, hydrocarbon vacuum pump, R600 vacuum pump, CM-EP CMEP-600 explosion proof recovery
