Our World...a strange place.

I think we are messed up cause of our Karma...we could have personal Karma..National Karma..Wordly Karma..etc etc..but I think we have Universal Karma. What if we, ourselves are genetic experiments.
This guy knows what I'm talking about.

We are definitely "gone bad" genetic experiments. LOL

Is there any hope.... or should would wipe the slate clean and try some new stuff? I vote for Nordic looking creatures
with a lifespan of about 35....and all peaceful weed tokers.

OR maybe..just maybe we (as a species) already have the correct DNA but they haven't been switched on yet. I believe I read where we have many inactive DNA strands and that we have no idea what their true functions are. And maybe those "sleeping strands" are why we only use such a small portion of our brain.

It's true that there is a good amount of DNA which we don't know the function of--but more and more we are figuring these out.

Some are areas where enzymes bind, others are part of cell division processes, and even large seemingly "useless" portions of DNA are thought to simply be placeholders and in some cases protective parts of DNA strands (these are nearer to "ends" of strands). Still others are simply there to promote folding of the DNA structure into chromosomes--or binding to histones (which aid in DNA folding).

There are even parts of DNA called G-rich regions which are the subject of a lot of research and appear to have a great deal of various functions (non transcription functions that is) associated with them.

DNA/RNA is potent stuff, it doesn't just give directions for building proteins. In fact RNA serves as the majority of the active site (catalytic portion) of ribosomes (our bodies' protein factories).

Honestly i'm more concerned with this scenario. Someone splices genes from some bacteria into, let's say a fish, and this fish is unexpectedly put into the wild where it goes ape shit. Then completely destroys the local population. With no competitors it has now unbalanced the natural cycle of life. It breeds with native species and transfers it's killer frankenfish gene. Then what??

This is EXACTLY the kind of shit we should be worried about on the level of DNA--because the answer to "Then what?" is then we're fucked.

What if GMO corn gets out and "infects" all the corn in the country--and then all of a sudden some virus or fungi comes along that the new engineered corn is incredibly vulnerable to?

Whoops, bye bye food supply.

This is exactly what is wrong with "playing God" with DNA.

When someone eats DNA we can predict what will happen pretty damn well, and the misconception here is that people think we can't.

What we CAN'T predict, however, is what the fuck evolution is going to throw at these new strains that we produce--or how they will respond if they break free and enter the environment in places we didn't intend them to.

Excellent point dirk.

no feelings hurt brotha! Just trying to show the irony in talking about credibility and taking it easy on a online forum....if your talking about credibility on an online forum then you most definatly are taking it to seriously:p. Squiggs just gets me riled up talking about things that i have experience with; and not presenting them correctly cough i guess cough haha......take it easy man!

this is already what has happened all over america, and it's part of monsantos plan to monopolize the market(which in reality they already have). just google a few statistics on the percentages of gmo crops to "heirloom" crops it's starting to get close to the 97% to 3% mark on soybeans, corn, wheat, tomatos you name it, it's gmo.......people would be amazed at the nuero-toxins you can get people to eat by growing gmo, spraying it down pesticies and herbacides(and organic pesticides and herbacides are just as bad) then feeding it to the biggest animal population on earth haha; poor cattle never even think twice about it.........take it easy

Anyone here know what mutagenesis is? It's what led to modern wheat, not GM (gene splicing).

YES! i'm glad somone brought this up. most people now-a-days don't even realize that many of the fruits and veggies and especially the grains are technically "real" or natural.......there is a debate going on in which people are argueing that all carbon 4 plants where created, and that mutating a plant is the only true way to get a carbon 4 based plant; though i believe that to be a little far fetched it is logical.....google it sometime and check it out nd post up what you think....take it easy haha and people would why there are so many food allergies now-a-days like ciliacs and all that crap.......take it easy

That's not terrifying at all.

A cool side note: glyphosate is now detectable in rainwater across most of the midwest and east coast. Cool right?

By all means, everyone, keep focusing on genetic material.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

pesticide/herbicide use is just one thing to worry about squiggly. But we have to understand that we are basically getting attacked and poisoned from every possible angle. Everything matters. There is no ONE thing that is more important than the others. It is all important and all of it needs to be addressed.
