I'm going to be growing autoflowers outside this year, probably starting first week of may. Id like to plant them directly into the ground with my other garden plants instead of pots. Would I be better off starting the seedlings indoors and then transplanting them into the ground or plant the seed directly into the ground where they will end up? I understand that if you start them indoors, they need to gradually be adjusted to the outside light in order to avoid being burned, but if I start them outside to begin with, will they be able to take the sun from the very beginning without having to slowly adjust them to the light like an indoor plant needs to be?

It would depend on your climate. I grow up in northern VT and run autos outdoor each summer. Our nights can get pretty cold in the spring so I start them indoor until they are established. I then do some exposure to the natural light right before moving outdoors full time (around mid May).

Do you transplant them into the ground or keep them in pots? If I’m understanding correctly the general rule of thumb is plant autos in the pot size it’s going to be harvested in instead of transplanting to prevent stress. I guess If I want to go directly into the ground I’d probably be better off just waiting closer to June vs the transplanting stress.

I put them in pots. I too have read about not transplanting autos but have also read to do so. I do currently up-pot but only once for my autos.
