in the moment i allmost grow in buckets with holes drilled in and they work well and last forever and are cheap as hell but theres a downside i really think the roots have sometimes problems to go thru the whole bucket and also the top 1/5 of the buckets never have much roots so these smart thingys will fix that and there should be no more root bound
I use
smart pots, and I have the "problem" of roots popping out of my soil when I water (they're that close to the surface).
They fix the root bound issue, from what I've read, by actually stopping the growth of the roots once they hit the edge, whereas with plastic pots the roots hit the edge, then curl up on themselves. In
smart pots, the root tips poke through the material, see light and feel air, then die off, forcing root growth to resume further inside the soil matter (closer to the tap root). I think
smart pots call it "air pruning". It seems to be for roots what topping your plants is for branches.
