ph ppm meter

i got my ph and pm meter today .my ph meter i calibrated with the solution that came with it had 4.01 and 6.86 solution one question is when i calibrated it i had to do it on both the 4.01 and 6.86 solution is it normal to have to calibrate it to both ? now my tap water is reading in the 5's for ph . now my tds meter i have some solution 382 ppm coming tomorrow but the directions for the tds says it is already calibrated for 642 can i still use the solution that 382 ppm to calibrate it tomorrow right now if i check my tap water with it it will show 014 ppm

Generally you'll follow the instructions included with the pH pen. I'm not sure on that brand, but the BlueLab brand pen I use must be calibrated with 7.0 solution first, then 4.0 or 10.0 solution. I generally calibrate mine once every 2 weeks because I use it multiple times daily.

I was under the impression that tap water is alkaline to minimize pipe corrosion, so I'm curious why yours is reading in the fives?

Maybe he's running off a well or his pH pen wasn't calibrated properly?

Yeah something is wrong and I hope it's the meter or I would stop drinking it ASAP

i re read the directions and it said do the 6.86 first then the 4.0 ell i did the 4.0 first so did i mess something up ?

i just checked the ph again with the meter this is a cup of water straight from the faucet it is reading 6.0 that is assuming it is calibrated correctly wouldnt i want to raise the ph to around 6.7 ?

That depends on what medium you are growing in.

Yep, this may change after you add nutes, though.

i understand that i would add anything like nutes to the water first then check the ph and correct it if i need to

nope nothing add or filtered with the water

When you calibrate PH pens there is 3 solutions. 4/7/10 usually (or close to it). You use the 7 first. Then you use the 4 or the 10 depending on which range you will use. 4 if reading 7 and below (most of the time for plants) or the 10 if reading 7 and above. Yours is prob sold for plants so why it came with just the 4/7. 7 rinse then 4.

I get that now but I did it in reverse so how bad would that mess up the readings
