Ok so I have seen this before in plants, but never on a brand new seedling. This is a rezdog Bottlerocket seedling about 6 weeks old. The seeds were in my fridge for 10 years in a sealed pack. There are two seedlings, one looks perfect and this one has these mosaic-like yellow patches coming in on the leaves. The pictures are not so great, taken on my phone but you can clearly see the problem The newest growth coming up looks like 1/3 of one leaf is missing and discolored like this.

In the center picture, left hand side you can see the new leaf coming up and a full 1/3 of it is missing with the mosaic coloring plainly visible.

Is it true that tobacco mosaic virus can spread through cigarette smoke? I have smoked indoors. Should I just throw this plant out? The other one is great like i said, I don't need plant viruses to deal with. And yes, I know the plant looks rough. . . Give me a break I had zero money for supplies. I crushed up some coco coir jiffy pots for grow medium and could barely afford a $14 bottle of earth juice grow which was the cheapest nutes at the shop. . . Forgot that earthjuice tends to have a wrong pH and I didn't get any pH correctors.

Is there any of DJ Shorts genes in any of those beans? I only ask because I have read descriptions of his genetics, and he states that some of his crosses will sport variegated leaves. I am running a cross right now( from seed) that is heavy on the "Grape Krush" and this has been happening to some of the leaves since the beginning of her life. Mine are blooming now and so far everything seems to be going great, but I do see this type of leaf on the canopy. I also have a different plant in the same room and she has not shown any signs of it spreading to her. They have been together their whole lives.
And I dont smoke tobacco.....

Variegation is interesting, I have had DJs blueberry do it on one branch and I cloned it and had whole plants doing it.
I recently had a WiFi do it on a few leaves in flower I wish I would have saw it sooner and cloned that one branch.

So variegation is not the same as a virus? This does not have that mottled color typical of mosaic virus it is a flat yellow discoloration that is evenly colored. I sound like a noob here but never have encountered this trait in a plant.

No there is no DJ short work in there it is durban/thai X cindy 99

How could you toss it and not know how it turns out just seems to intriguing to me and the TMV has nothing to do with cigarette smoke as i am constantly smoking in my veg room , even got a ash tray in it ..... i hope that correct but never seen any issues from smoking in my garden , granted i'm a fanatical cleaner in there also

sure he did but thai is not known for variegation. DJ's lines are all at least an F4 generation with most being F6 or more. They are so inbred that they have all these sports, unique strange traits. I don't know how this plant got it, as long as it's not a virus and not contagious to other plants it's cool.

that would be my deciding factor as long as it kept to the 1 plant - i wouldn't toss it

On the dj short thing I know I read numerous times that if you take a plant past f4 your breeding out desirable traits ? any truth to this ?

That's why 99% of his plants grow short, spindly, and slow. Great breeding material, and pretty heady but usually runts that don't yield well.

Variegation is not the same as a virus. Viruses can cause variegation, but variegation can also be genetic, ie it's a chimera, having two different cell types coexisting.

If it were TMV, you'd want to isolate that seedling immediately.

And since it is from seed and showed up immediately as the plant was growing I am assuming it is not a virus. Chances are slim. The mutated leaves are yellow, but not mottled yellow like mosaic virus I have seen. I will clone a branch that does not show the variegation and hope the resulting plant has minimal or no variegation.

Yea I'm keeping it, if you were referring to me as Factual lol. That's actually a good nickname I am sure you would agree if you knew me. The weird plant has a real nice structure. . .Almost looks like a 50/50 indy/sat hybrid which is impossible of course but it is densely noded and branching so it will give a lot of clones. The other plant looks way sativa, more columnar with less branching. I have not even sexed them yet, but it looks like at least one is definitely a feminina. Even if they are males I will keep clones of them around because this strain is extinct now, and supremely dank. I would like to make some F2's and share them. Greentipz gave me some of his D19, that's Destroyer thai X malawi. Seems like a nice coincidence to get that strain right now, and the bottlerocket is(thai X durban) X cinderella99 so it would be fun to cross two Thai/African based strains into each other. I'm gonna be cautious because of the mutation, probably will only flower out one clone of the weird plant to see how it does.
