I've read here and elsewhere that the correct temp for purging is 120F.

I'm curious what that ACTUALLY means. If I set my vac temp to 120, the heating element hits 120. The bottom of the vac chamber gets to about 109 and the silpad surface and extract get to around 98.

Should the temperature of the extract be 120F, without regard to what the heating element needs to be set to in order to achieve that temperature?

My understanding from all the stuff ive read is that the surface temp of the oil would be 120f.. if thats what you wanted, i keep mine around 95f to 100f. Maybe someone else with more exp can chime in..

Each strain is different.. temps vary accordingly.

as far as what temp you set your heater too you'll have to experiment with that and keep checking with a temp gun till you know for sure what temp your oils at...but 98's not bad.

I'm using a thermal imaging device (FLIR) to measure the temperature of the various surfaces, so I can dial it in pretty well. What I'm gathering is that my target temperature for the extract should be right about where it is though, between 95 and 100F, not 120F.

I made some changes to my extraction process, aimed at reducing the introduction of H2O into the dissolved solution. After extraction and initial boil off, I vac purged at nearly ambient temperature (85F approx.) for 24 hours. After purging I removed the silpad and let it cool. I picked it up, it slipped out of my hands, and fell on the floor... FACE UP! (Whew.) when it hit the ground, the extract shattered into pieces on the silpad.

Great big shards of hard, clear, amber shatter. Woot woot!
