Welcome to Security

This forum is for practical, lawful discussion about keeping yourself, your home, your grow, your data, and your privacy safer.

Use this thread as the starting point before posting. It explains what belongs here, what does not belong here, how to ask better security questions, and where to find older reference threads.

This sticky replaces the old sticky stack so the Security forum has one clean starting point. The older pinned threads are no longer stickied. Some are linked below as archived community discussions.

This is a reference thread. Please start a new thread for your own situation instead of replying here.

1. What belongs in Security

Good topics for this forum include:
  • Physical security for legal personal grows: cameras, lights, locks, alarms, gates, access control, and general deterrence.
  • Outdoor theft prevention, neighborhood awareness, and non-confrontational security planning.
  • Online privacy, account hygiene, safe posting, image metadata, and profile privacy.
  • Vendor, smart-device, IoT, grow-light app, camera app, and cloud-account privacy concerns.
  • Odor, light leaks, noise, visibility, and general discretion issues.
  • Landlord, worker, inspection, repair, and contractor access questions, discussed within lease and local law.
  • Dogs as pets/alert animals, fencing, signage, and responsible property security.
  • Legal-risk discussion in broad terms: plant limits, lease/HOA issues, local compliance, and when to consult a lawyer.
  • Emergency planning for theft, trespass, fire, electrical risk, or unsafe situations.

Security is about reducing risk, not escalating risk.

2. What does not belong here

Do not post or request:
  • Instructions for evading law enforcement, hiding evidence, bypassing warrants, or defeating investigations.
  • Advice for growing where it is illegal. Members are responsible for knowing and following their own local laws.
  • Utility theft, meter tampering, bypassing electrical meters, or stealing power.
  • Booby traps, explosives, weapons setups, retaliation, ambushes, or plans to injure people.
  • Threats against neighbors, thieves, contractors, landlords, police, or other members.
  • Doxxing, names, addresses, faces, license plates, tracking labels, utility bills, police reports, or identifying details about private people.
  • Drug-test evasion instructions, probation-test advice, or “how do I beat a test?” threads.
  • Buying, selling, trading, hookups, or solicitation.

Posts that move into threats, violence, doxxing, trap-making, utility tampering, or evasion may be removed by staff.

3. Before you post

Search first. Useful search terms include:
  • OPSEC
  • metadata
  • profile privacy
  • safe to post
  • window blackout
  • landlord inspection
  • contractor access
  • smart meter
  • security cameras
  • motion sensor
  • outdoor theft
  • odor control
  • fire causes
  • electrical safety
  • IoT breach
  • vendor data breach
If an old thread is close but not exactly your situation, start a fresh thread and link the older one for context. Check dates before relying on older advice. Products, laws, forum features, smart devices, and security assumptions change.

4. Use clear thread titles

Specific titles get better answers.

Good examples:
  • [Outdoor / Legal Grow] Need camera and lighting plan for theft prevention
  • [Apartment / Inspection] Scheduled entry next week — what should I consider?
  • [Online Privacy] What should I remove before posting grow photos?
  • [Smart Gear] Privacy concerns with Wi-Fi grow lights and app accounts
  • [Window / Light Leak] Blackout ideas that still look normal from outside
  • [Emergency / Trespass] Need lawful alarm options for the next few nights

Avoid vague titles like:
  • Help
  • Am I safe?
  • Security question
  • What should I do?
  • Need advice fast

5. Copy/paste security question template

When asking for help, copy this into your post and fill in what you can.

Thread title:
Example: [Outdoor / Legal Grow] Need camera and lighting plan for theft prevention

General location / legal context:
State, province, or country only if needed. Do not post your city, address, neighborhood, road, landlord name, employer, or exact location.

Grow type:
Indoor / outdoor / greenhouse / apartment / house / rural / urban

Legal status:
Legal adult-use / medical / hemp / unsure / other
Keep this general. Members are responsible for knowing and following local laws.

Main security issue:
Theft risk / visibility / smell / light leak / landlord access / contractor visit / online privacy / smart device / neighbor concern / fire or electrical concern / other

Time sensitivity:
Immediate / next few days / planning ahead / general research

What is visible, smellable, or noticeable?
Do not include identifying photos or exact property details.

Current setup:
Locks, cameras, lighting, fencing, alarms, dogs, odor control, window coverings, account/privacy settings, etc.

Budget range:
Low / moderate / flexible / already own equipment

What you have already tried:

What you are not willing to share publicly:

Good answer: exact location, photos of the front of the house, license plates, faces, utility bills, receipts, serial numbers, neighbor names.

Main questions:
1.
2.
3.

Photos or sketches:
Upload directly to THCFarmer when useful, but remove or crop anything identifying first.

6. Quick security checklist

Before posting or making changes, run through the basics:
  • Know your local laws, lease, HOA rules, plant limits, and inspection/access rules.
  • Do not post exact location, faces, license plates, mail, addresses, street signs, tracking labels, receipts, or identifiable backgrounds.
  • Do not assume photos are safe just because they uploaded successfully. Crop identifying details and remove metadata before posting when privacy matters.
  • Use unique passwords and two-factor authentication on important accounts.
  • Be cautious with cloud-connected grow lights, cameras, controllers, plugs, sensors, and vendor apps.
  • Do not tell people who do not need to know. Bragging creates risk.
  • Keep outside-facing signs of a grow low-key: odor, light leaks, noise, heat, traffic, visible exhaust, and unusual window setups.
  • Use lawful deterrents: lighting, cameras, locks, alarms, fencing, signage where allowed, and clear boundaries.
  • Do not confront thieves or trespassers if it puts you or others at risk. Document, avoid escalation, and contact local authorities when appropriate.
  • Do not set traps or use weapons as security devices.
  • Do not overload circuits, power strips, or extension cords. Get qualified help for electrical work.
  • Have a fire plan: smoke alarms, clear exits, clean wiring, safe timers/controllers, and no sketchy electrical loads.

7. Emergency note

THCFarmer is not an emergency service. If someone is actively breaking in, threatening people, starting a fire, or creating immediate danger, prioritize personal safety and contact local emergency services where appropriate.

8. Archived reference threads

These older threads are no longer stickied, but they may still be useful as archived community discussions. Read the full discussion and check the dates before relying on older advice.
