i need a good portable a/c unit and don't really know which one to choose. costco has a sharp brand right now that's pretty quiet and it's around $450. i don't know that i really care about it being quiet though, since my vortex fan is so loud. i just need something nice and reliable that does what i need it to do - cool the room. any suggestions? i don't have a window, so the window a/c is not really an option. also, what do i do with the exhaust smell?

cut a hole for a window unit its worth it, you could get a 10k window unit for 200 bucks. FUCK PORTABLES. I have 2 right now and fucking hate them.

Portables are problems. Try to get creative and find another solution. They are not as efficient as window units or split systems. I am a HVAC tech.

Totally agree. . . Portable AC will cool a bedroom for sleeping but for growing it is literally throwing away cash, hand over fist.

if you are using c02 don't use a window unit and only use a portable that has the intake and exhaust hoses so it does not exchange you c02 enriched air with air outside the grow room. It's not a bad idea to have a small portable a/c unit because they de-humidify also, which beats having a de-humidifier in your room which produces unwanted heat

ok, so what can i do if i don't go with a portable? i'm not handy, don't know a handyman that i can let in on my grow, and don't have a window to use. i suppose i could cut a hole in the wall to my bedroom, so is there a way to make that work, or am i going to be dealing with water leaking on the carpet and tons of heat? i honestly don't know what to do....

Any ac is going to put out heat. If you are talking about cutting a hole in a bedroom wall and placing a window unit thru it to cool another space (back of unit hanging in bedroom), it is not gonna work to well (lots of heat in the bedroom). A portable will work for a small setup, but that still has a hot air exhaust that has to be vented somewhere, and the smell will come out the exhaust, even when a dual hose unit is used.

i have a garage on one side, and i suppose i could punch through that wall, but i don't want to mess around with framing. is there a vertical unit that's really slim that would work? maybe i could just put a catch pan below it or some shit...

I just bought a sharp CV-10NH (it's the black one. The white is bomb too!), I'm rocking it with a 1k magnum hood in a closet (4x7x8), temps stay nice. I needed it for the quietness of the unit.

I messed around with the room a bit today, temp reader says closet and outside room are the same temp (82.6). I really doubt that is true but don't know what changed. Still cold air oozing out of the unit. Gotta figure out what I did :shake

If a HVAC is giving advice though, I def. would start building with those ideas and thoughts. There is enough info between here, google and amazon that will help :bongsmi:

HNIC what the fuck are you talking about punching holes in stuff for? have you done any homework at all before you posted this thread? look i'm not trying to bust your balls but i'm not going to explain what's been said here in detail that was pages long already and was just posted last week use the search button fam. here is what i'll say

AGAIN PORTABLES SUCK THEY DO NOT WORK, THEY DONT COOL WELL ENOUGH AND THEY LEAK SMELL
PORTABLES HAVE TO BE EXHAUSTED JUST LIGHT A LIGHT

if you read on the box building DIY for a window ac you can use a window unit and then exhaust it just like a portable but it's more efficient, cools WAY better, cheaper and dosnt leak smell in exhaust. use the search button fam......

If you really want a portable go with this you will have to run a chiller or well water to it but in my situation the 5 ton version of this unit worked best for me. Kwikool units are pricey but if a portable ac is your only option they are the best!

did you miss the part where i said i'm not handy? i look at that thread and honestly do not know how to make that box, exhaust the heat, have no idea how to control the moisture/condensation...etc. plug and play is pretty much my only option, since it's hard enough for me to set the radio stations in my car. me = retard, ok?

if you can put together a cardboard box you can make this box. you are only taking 4 pieces of foam board and taping them together and then with any sharp object (like a steak knife) cutting a hole and sticking a duct into it. if you have physical disabilities i understand but this is not a project for someone "handy" this is like taping a few pieces of shit together then taping it onto the ac.

if you are disabled sorry to hear it if you are not sorry to hear it but Either way build this or find someone to build it for you a portable will waste your money.

seriously if you cant do this if that is to complicated i pray for your grow because 1 of my two buddies that built his is a complete idiot and his was done and running in 30 minutes and i refused to help him because it is so simple. he was standing in the store to buy the ac asking me if i was going to come over and i hung up and txt him the url to that diy thread and he did it.

i dont care what a portable ac says it's btu is the shit aint true. i use two and neither cooled a room nearly as well as they should for the btu they were supposed to be. they are a complete waste of time the only thing i'd use mine for is build a copper tube spiral drop it in a bucket and poing my portable in it and pump my res through that copper pipe and i would duct my portable to the bucket and make it a half ass res chiller but the cost of running it makes it not even worth that imo. that thing will sit in storage until i post it on craigslist.

Xceptional, How big a room and how many light's you cooling?
I have a LG 9000btu portable cooling a 9x9x7 room with 2k and ballasts in the room. It keeps light on temp's 74 degrees.
This is below grade which does help as well. I also don't have to worry about smell issues.

like stated MOST portable ac's suck. Not as efficient, suck c02 out of the room. Agreed 200% I ran a portable for a very short time. Sold it was fast as I could. The power it used was super excessive. Pge was out of control. A window unit w 4k of light vs portable with 1k has same bill. If I kept running the Portable I would go broke.

Got window unit and never looked back.

Was helping a fellow patient setup there grow and they would not accept any of the popular choices. Window unit or split. Was not stealth enough for them. WTF. If your that paranoid maybe you should not be growing. Back on topic.

So I checked around and found the spot coolers. They are expensive but they work very well.

On another hand spotcoolers do not suck. They are designed for cooling server rooms.

search google for spot coolers to view the portable coolers.

Can make up for fabrication skills or make it more stealth with some $$.

I you do not have the budget for one, May want to check into paying someone to modding a window unit for you.

Good luck.
