Morning all.....
so they tell me hydroton will be running out soon.....i just found some red lava rock,as i heard this is good to grow in?...Has anybody used red lava rock...Do i have to break it up a bit?
Any info would be a bonus..thanks

Any lava rock the size of a marble (peanut) works great! We use it because it's much cheaper and ezier to get! Wash it thoroughly with 10% bleach solution or stronger; then raise 2-3 times with plain water. We let all the lava air dry before use but not needed if you know you raised thoroughly.

good luck

thanks tex...for some reason, i thought it had to be red.....duhhhh

I read somewhere that the mine they get the clay for hydroton from has been depleted.

I used red lava in my first krusty grow. Bitch to clean and really heavy. rent/buy cement mixer with high pressure washer to clean or you filters will clog too much. Before buying a lot I would take some of their dust and take a pH reading. Not all volcanoes are equal. It turned out too heavy for me but the 2" rock grew some nice plants. I think I paid 180 bucks for 2 yards.
I would use a greenhouse disinfectant as bleach is a bitch to rinse out of lava. JK
I believe hydroton is an expanded clay product.

Ya that shit gets real heavy in abundance not as heavy as soil but I would imagine like what JK said that dust will clog stuff up bad.

Yeah lava rock works really good. They sell it in different sizes too, I have a layered mix I do and I start off with the granules 1st... you can buy lava rock online now for really cheap and free shipping g

Hey folks,
New to the site and the cultivar! Well growing it anyway. So I started doing vermacomposting several months back and had a thought, which is usually dangerous. I am about to start my first crop and trying to tweak my normal soil to suit what I've read about canibus needs. I have red lava rock on my property and use in my other soils. Im thinking of putting the crushed lave rock in the worm bins for a couple weeks in a mesh bag to kind of pre cultivate bio mass in the pores. Worm castings dont have a high N2 ratio so burning shouldn't be an issue even fresh.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,

I've used it with good results in buckets, didn't even clean it well, used bennies tho.
