So as I have been wading through forums and articles on growing as well as dealing with lots of personal opinions I have not found a definitive answer on replacing grow lights.
The solution has ranged from "replace after every harvest" (from the hydro store) to "fuck man... I run my lights until they die". Nobody seems to know when or why, excuse my ignorance but I see a lot of "voodoo" here.
So far the arguments for changing bulbs:
MH and HPS degrade over time
The spectrum changes, you may get the same "light" but the usable spectrum diminishes
Against:
$$$
I'm real big on testing and having measurable results. Purchased a light meter, cheapo from the hydro store, that measures foot candles. Unfortunately the brand new MH spectrum enhanced mega$asskickerifyou usethisbulbyouget18# a light measured lower FC then then tired old giant MH $30 "light your warehouse" bulb.
For now, Im going to start counting hours and replace when the manufacturer recommends.
I would love to see a white paper with some definitive answers. How does everyone change out their lamps? Should you let a bulb go till it dies or is there a happy medium? What do you do and why?
