I have 6 inch air cooled hoods. Is it beneficial to run a larger fan (8 or 10 inch fan) or is that counter productive?

My opinion....counter productive, because the air moving through a smaller diameter would cause friction, and a byproduct of friction is heat.
But I'm interestd in hearing what others have to say.

Running a bigger fan then the hood ducts is beneficial and will provide more cooling power to your lights which in turn will make them run for longer at a higher output. Remeber that friction only takes place between solid materials, when dealing with gases i.e. co2 or air there are simply positive or negative pressures, in conjunction with this it's always good to keep a positive pressure inside ur room to help keep dust, spore, small insect eggs etc outta your op. hope this helps...... Take it easy

If your useing 600w lamp, you need at less an 8" fan at 600cfm. 1000w 10"fan per light. And Yes you can order hoods with 10" vents. My self I went to bare bulb screw all the ducts.
