Found a bunch of these when I was moving some dirt for reuse.

First I found one then another and another maybe 30 in all. The dirt came out of a 300 gallon smart pot. I had put 1 wheelbarrow load in each of 4 different 200 gallon pots when I noticed the first one. Really freaked me out because I had no ideal what they were. Spent the next 2 hours going through all the dirt where I found a mess of them. After some research I found out they are Jerusalem Cricket larva ( Potato Bugs ) .Good for the garden. Had to laugh at myself for being so stupid. Glad I did not kill them all. Put them in the wheelbarrow with some dirt. I release them tomorrow.

It's is a red headed cock chafer it's the pupa lives in ground and eats roots of plants at night you will see a black beetle crawling about that is the adult . Feed them to your chickens .

LOL, not so sure now. Looked up that Cockchafer and the larvae can be twins with the Jerusalem Cricket larvae. I have taken the dirt out of 5, 300 gallon smart pots and only found them in one so far. I have 15 more to move the dirt out of. I do see black beetles and Potato Bugs on the property here and there. I hope they are Potato Bugs.

Might also compare to cicada larvae. Your pictures aren't very good so a positive id is impossible.

Grub worm, they destroy gardens, eat roots. Bear Grills eats them raw, yum!

LOL, yeah after looking around there are many larvae ( Grubs ) that look very very similar to each other. One reason that I am leaning toward a Jerusalem Cricket ( AKA Potato Bug ) is that these were almost a foot down in the dirt and were very slow movers. Some of the other species I looked at seemed more active and are right below the surface. I pretty muched reomved all that I could find and will keep my eyes open when I am mixing in amendments to the pots that got that dirt and the remaining dirt I am moving.

Dang and I thought it was the larva of a Japanese Beatle.

The skunks go crazy digging holes searching for them in my yard. I used nematodes for grubs last month and I can't seem to find as many.

Yeah I saw a video about a certain type of Nematode that kills grubs. Could be a Japanese Beetle, Cicada, June Bug, Jurusalem Cricket and 100 others. I not to concerned since I only found them in the one spot so far. Sort of funny I never have seen them before. Been out here over 15 years and some of my soil has been reused almost as long.

I found a bunch of these in my compost pile one year. I think I let the pile get a little rancid. Where they come out of the ground you see little dime size holes. They ruined a lot of my peaches. (green june beetle)

Never saw one of those here. I have seen Jerusalem Crickets, Cicada, Black Beetles the ones people call stink bugs.

So many insects look alike at that stage; keep a few, and you'll be able to ID it at the next instar, in a couple weeks.

I have read that some of the Cicada Grubs stay in this form for years. Like over 10 if I remember right.

@below frigid .. it's 17 years but either way it's a hell of a long time. What do you think they are doing to occupy themselves? Do they wake up in the morning saying 3000 days down and only 3000 days to go. Then they climb up from the depths of the earth only to be greeted buy a CHICKEN!!

You guys are funny. I was thinking about Tremors when I found them. Yeah, to bad the chickens are far away from the garden. These guys do damage before they come up.
