yeah more area for air to pass through as well, its northerngrowlights new heatsink to replace to 140mm round style which i loved.but these handle alot more heat/power up to 100w cob i guess. ssc is just a lil trade mark i did,my cutter has a engraving tip built in so its super simple once you figure out the damn program lol sixstrings custom cobs ?

This is the thread I've been searching for!! Thanks @sixstring for posting this and @stonestacker for directing me here. Lots of questions but I also got a lot of reading to do now. My brothers and I's little operation is getting ready to expand and I've been pushing for LED's for all the obvious ancillary costs savings but the units we were looking at were big money this diy set up is perfect

@sixstring do you think this is worth 44 bucks or should I take advantage of their price on the cxb3590s and put it together myself for more $$?

Idk much about that new chip but the 120mm heatsink will only handle 50w passive.if your looking for a 1 cob setup i think you should look at his citizen (shitizen) light engine with the fan built in for 65 bucks.that one can be pushed to 100w no problem

So I could just buy the whole setup minus the driver for 65 and wire them in series
Would I get away cheaper just buying the parts and soldering it myself, enough cheaper for it to make sense to do it myself?

yeah you can put a good chip on this heat sink and run it to 100w with no cooling fan so no fan cost ,no fan driver cost.

what are you trying to light up space wise and plant sizes ?

Im growing with a full spectrum galaxy hydro and I want bigger yield. I was looking at a 2kw hps DE system for around 1000 including pulleys, ducting and fan/filter but I saw your white led results and second guessed myself. I will be growing in a 4x8 tent and would like to add to my 1200watt cob with some white light.

well to just add some extra lights in a spot or 2 the cobkit light engines aint bad.but for a 4 x 8 tent if you put 1400w to 1600w of cobs in there it would kill it and the heat is way easier to deal with because for the most part it all rises up ,so a decent fan hung high in the tent should cool it no problem.with hps the lamps throw heat down at the plant, the ir will heat the tent walls as well as the leaves, soil, ect, much hotter way to light up a space imo.im running under 1100w in a 4 x 12 and its plenty of light imo.but i could swap out my drivers for 1400ma and be at 1500w ,i just dont see the need unless my plants were over 6 feet tall i guess.
back to your grow,if your running 2 x led panels you could toss 1 cob @ 60 to 100w in the center of the panels and then toss 2 more on each end of the tent, use a lower watt cob on the 4 corners like 50w and fill out the space. or do 6 cobs like this
:#:#: where the # is your current led panels and the : is a pair of cobs all running @ 50w each

I just have the one 1200w cob, its the full spectrum pink kind with ir and uv. I was thinking I could get about 6 or 8 cobs like you have and surround my current cob with them to get a uniform light spread. The 1200 watt(6x200 watt cobs) just barely covers the 4x8 and I dont get the huge colas like I want, thats why I was considering hps.

ok now i got a better idea of what your trying to do.i think i would suggest you build or buy 2 bars of 4 or 5 and mount them on each end of your tent with your panel in the center.so theres lots of ways to build these but i like the 2 main types of drivers which is 1050ma and 1400 ma.once you get above 1400ma with cree chips your losing some effeciency and as i have said my 35 w cobs do an awesome job on 5 foor tall plants so i dont see a need to go past 50w on these.plus when you drive them soft you have alot less heat coming from them and they should in theory last forever.that cobkits site has some decent prices for diy and so does northerngrowlights.com.personally i like the cree chips with ngl 120mm heatsinks driven with meanwell 1050ma.but you can use this driver to run 4 cree 36v and get 50w each from the cobs and still be safe on the 120mm heatsink for passive cooling.here the driver for that http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/st...reId=10001&catalogId=10001&productId=2189345&
heatsinks here https://cobkits.com/product/120-mm-passive-pin-fin-heatsink/
cree chips here. i picked the 3000k because i like them but i also like the 2700k chips as much lol.
