After they ate my entire outdoor crop at one spot last year I got recommendations to use
diatomaceous earth, piled in a circle around each plant. Also copper or other metal rings around each stalk.
Saw photos of one dude in northern Europe who cuts up aluminum beer cans -- cut off the top and bottom, cut down one side so you have a sheet, wrap around the stalk loosely, bury into the dirt, turn over the top edge to make it tough for critters to climb over.
All those recommendations are second-hand, though, I'm staying indoors (and legal!) this year...
