Autos do pretty well, just can’t mess with them too much a little LST they seem fine with, but I’ve seen people top them, supercrop them, and still have good runs so . I always just did LST on them when I ran them consistently these where under 2x 200w blurples

Some had buds comparable to the size of a spray paint can

I fully acknowledge my lack of experience with Autos.....I still don't like them, but I've seen a few people do quite well with them. The genetics/breeder has to be good. Then it's either outdoors in the right places, or you have to have skills indoors...

Facts man, I’ve beat the crap out of a few autos just to see, you know, potting up at weird times topping the piss out of them. Never had a single issue. granted you can only top so much because you’re on a timer but still done pretty well with them myself.

I prefer photos as well, easier to deal with especially if you have a plant get sick in veg you have time to nurse her back, for an auto… there’s no recovery time, so yeild will suffer.

I do agree it seems that genetics seems to be the key factor, they stunt easily and again no recovery time, so it’s important to start with genetics that are strong hard part is finding them before you start.

Eyes are great because you can observe things with them and then use your brain to draw comparisons. You don't even need any fancy equipment or lab testing, its plain to see for all of those with these miraculous orbs inside our skulls, that Autoflowering genetics are inferior to equivalent photoperiod.

We must ELIMINATE autos and stop this needless watering down of the gene pool. Photoperiods are objectively better than autos, which are basically just hemp plants bred to have a little more thc. All the while, infiltrating our bongs and subverting our mission of creating a better cannabis for the future. PHOTOSUPREMACISTS UNITE! Rid the world of the scourge that is the autoflower!

So we'll put you down as "undecided"..... ;)

That's certainly a passionate take on Autos. I tend to agree with you. Even if someone gets "good auto genetics" and grows them really well, and I've seen some that ended up looking really nice.....there's still going to be a certain % of ruderalis, and it's not going to be as strong as the photoperiod equivalent. I think Autos should be relegated to a niche variety used outdoors in areas with short growing seasons. And there are no real controls that prevent all of this ruderalis from leaking into the overall gene pool. There's also the "final product" issue. If someone is buying an ounce or whatever of a certain variety that was an auto.... is it always disclosed to the buyer? Shouldn't autos cost less due to the ruderalis factor?

The autos I have ... most were given to me by my son in law. I purchased some but the majority were on his dime ... I don't feel like I have much to lose. I have fought several losing battles with trying to finish photoperiods in a Michigan fall. Many early strains struggle to finish.

Indoors, its always photos. You can control all aspects of the grow and I already have a small list of favorite strains that are already tried and proven, and a good collection of unopened seeds that I haven't tried yet. lol

That seems to be the best use of autos. The short growing season thing. I'm not saying you do it but I do wonder how much cross-pollination goes on between outoor autos and indoor photos. There already are "fast finishers" that are a mix of the two.

On the other side would be someone seeking a variety that flowerrs immediately after sprouting....cotyledon, flower. It matures in 30 days and yields 1 gram per plant. As soon as the seed pops, out comes the jeweler's loup. 200x.

I do not have experience with autos, only from what I’ve seen here on the farm. An experienced grower get them right, while a lot of newer growers seem to have more issues with them. Search the forum for “Auto issues” and you’ll get a bunch of results. Search “Photoperiod issues” and you’ll still get results with auto issues . Needless to say, more issues SEEM to pop up more regarding autos, size yield, weird mutations etc….whereas photoperiod issues seem to result in incorrect light settings, over/underfeeding, over/underwatering etc.

My personal choice will always be photo, but that’s just my style of growing as well.

I bought seeds that I thought were autos for my first indoor grow. They weren't autos. I ran into trouble with spider mites and destroyed the crop. Being new to indoor growing, I thought autos would be better for an inexperienced grower like I was at the time. Over time, I decided that the opposite was more likely the case. My reasoning has to do with how fast autos grow and how that rapid growth rate allows little time to correct problems. Thus, I conclude that autos might be better suited to a grower who can diagnose and correct problems quickly.

I’m a super new grower. I thought autos would help me fast track myself to smokeable success.

They sorta did.

If you're a noob they might…

IMHO opinion, photos are the way to go.

Auto's sound a great choice for a quick outdoor grow, and indoors grow in the winter, helps to help the temps, environment constant 24/7.

Disadvantage of auto's
You have to buy seeds for every crop vs free clones.
The lights on 24/0 can cost double the electric vs 12/12.
Every plant from seed is different vs clones, they will give you a room full of the same plants(phototype).
Autos give you no control when they start to flower, so a full room could be a challenge.

When autos start winning awards, competing against photos, I might consider them. They're not there yet.

I grow for several qualities -- potency, buzz type, and to a lesser extent the structure of the plant. Autos fail to measure up in potency, IMO.

To compete well with photos, autos need to be consistently of high potency. If I grow a tent full of photo clones, I get that. With autos, you'd be lucky to have one plant that measured up.

Tell that to Anesia Seeds. Some of their autos are certainly worth growing!

This should be seen as a strain to strain thing. Some don't come close. Others are pushing the limits of many photos.
