I was thinking of using the splitter in my veg room: 600hps and 400mh (horizontal).

Flower room will have 1000hps (vertical).

Thoughts?

Do you use a flip box of any sort?

I don't think the splitter can do a 600 & a 400. Just two 600's on the boosted 1kw setting.

It will do a 600 and 400 I think it's gotta be 600 Hps 400 mh. I've got a couple says right on them.

I just emailed Solis Tek to ask if the splitter would work with 1k bulbs, running them at 600w/400w similar to how you can run a single 1kw bulb at lower wattages with their ballast.

Their reply was:
Thank you for contacting us! You might have trouble getting those combinations to work with the higher wattage lamps. We recommend that you use the combinations listed as we cannot guarantee or warranty any other combinations. You will also not be receiving the intended spectrum of your MH lamp if you were to dim it that drastically (1000w -> 600w/400w).

Side note, there was a little printing error on one of the functional combinations. The 600w HPS and 400 MH combination was printed incorrectly and it is supposed to be 600w HPS and 600w MH.

I also note on the product page it states that it won't actually run them at 600w, but less (500w I'd assume)

Yes, they are correct on this and well supported by the bulb mfrs themselves on the subject. When you dim a thouie to 600W, for instance, not only does the spectrum shift and hurt the quality of light- but the quantity of light drops much more than the expected ratio due to lower operating efficiency- so at 60% power, you're getting less than half the lumens. Worse, this prematurely ages the bulb. Premature aging isn't so bad on hps, but mh is much more sensitive; running a 1000W mh at 60% can shorten its life by 90%- this from Philips themselves!

The takeaway; bulbs run best at rated wattage like the lighting engineers intended, but overboost if the bulb can take it. Don't run them on dimmed settings, especially not mh.

My intention was to run 600w & 400w bulbs (actually 600mh & 600hps per the above email from Solis Tek), not dim the 1000w's.

Does that matter? Will it achieve what I'm trying to do for the veg room?

Yes, tt will run a hps and a mh both off the one ballast. Neither will quite be running at 600w though, and that does affect the color and intensity of the light, and it sounds like lifespan as well. Might be prudent to start with a cheap MH bulb rather than an expensive one.

On my solis tek digitals you must use 1000watt bulb either (mh or hps) in the fixture and I dial down from there. Do the new matrix run the same way? And with the splitter do you have to become watt specific with the bulbs?

Yes, we (at least I) are talking about the Matrix.

From Kyle @ Solis Tek:
"Thank you for contacting us!

The 600W HPS and 600W MH combination does indeed work. The 600w HPS and 400W MH combination was printed accidentally and is not a recommended combination. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. We are currently working to correct the recommended combinations on the website, splitter, and promotional material at the moment.

We would recommend using the 600W HPS (2K) + 600W MH 10K for a complete full spectrum option.

If you are running the ballast on Solis Boost you will be running at about 1050W (525W each lamp). Running them at 525W each will in turn will under drive your lamps so they should last you a bit longer while still keeping their intended spectrum.

Hope this helps!
"

The Solis Tek STK1000, which afaik has the same lamp driving tech as the matrix just without the timer/controller part, can run 1kw, 600w, or 400w HPS or MH bulbs at any wattage at or lower than the bulbs rated wattage (that is, a 1kw can be run at 1kw with or without boost, 600 or 400, and a 600 can be run at 600 or 400).

Solis tek does the 600 watt 10k spectrum I recommend getting the splitter and doing 2 600watt 10k for veg. The ladies love it!!!

You can get the ePapillon 1000w fixtures in 400 volt. Lights Interaction in Holland made them solely in 400v until Dutch Garden Supplies International convinced them to make them in 240 volt for the hobby industry.

You misunderstand. The 400V isn't the line voltage to the ballast; it's the voltage the bulb itself is run at. The ballast itself continues to plug into a standard 240V circuit. This is different and incompatible with standard ANSI S52 bulbs. Currently, there is no 400V 1000W bulb that can be hung vertically.

So what is the point of these 400v bulbs, Tty? What benefits do they impart compared to it's disadvantages?

Better spectrum, more lumens/umol for the same watts, much longer lasting bulbs.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!
