Hi all!
I know I might be jinxing myself and there’s a shit ton of things that can go wrong these last couple of months, but I have a gift card burning a hole in my pocket and I’d like to buy some stuff I’ll actually need rather than stuff I don’t, so I have a few questions about storage:
First, how many ounces of weed will properly fit in a quart mason jar?
Second, does anyone have a reasonable estimate of how many ounces I might get based on the photos? (The tent is 4.6’ x 2.3’. Two 100 watt led lights. Plant on right is 95% indica, left is 50% sativa.)
Third, what size Boveda packs should I use and thoughts on 58% vs. 62%?
Fourth, if I’m using Boveda packs, should I still buy the little hygrometers? I’ve never stored weed before.
Fifth, weed affects me pretty strongly and I only use it in the evening, mainly for insomnia, so if I'm lucky and get more than four ounces, I may be storing it up to a year or more. Is there anything special I should do for long term storage?
I know that’s a lot of questions, so many thanks in advance to anyone willing to give an utter newbie some advice.

In hindsight, maybe I shouldn’t have asked for a five part essay complete with thesis and supporting examples. I know you guys are busy. I guess the only important question is:
How many ounces fit in a wide-mouth quart jar when properly packed for curing and possible long term storage? I’m seeing everything from 1/2 ounce to two.

Not sure exactly how much fits in a jar. It varies depending on weight and bud structure.

If properly cured it should still be good for a year.

I've used boveda 62% packs and so far they seem to do good. There are also grove bags but I've never used them. I still use a small hydrometer each jar.

Hope that helps some.

That's a difficulty question to answer with a lot of factors contributing to the answer. Bud density, size and shape are just three of them so I think 1/2 to 2 oz is a reasonable answer. I store some of my harvest in jars but the vast majority is stored in Grove bags or similar products. You should order some and give them a try. I think they do a great job. I store the bulk of my product in bags and transfer some into jars for everyday use.

I definitely like the looks of those Grove bags. I think I might give those a try. Plus, they’re considerably less expensive than quart jars, Boveda packs, and hygrometers. Thanks!

Hello,

Grove Bags are designed to regulate the internal humidity, but they depend on a stable external environment to function optimally. While the bags can help to some extent in very dry or humid conditions, they may not perform as effectively if the room's conditions are extreme. For best results, it's advisable to maintain a balanced relative humidity (RH) range in the room (around 50-60%) and consider using humidity packs or dehumidifiers when necessary.

They essentially are humidity packs that you put the weed inside of.

What’s best for long term storage?

It’s winter and dry with the heat. I run humidifiers but still hard pressed to keep room RH much above 35%.

I use grove bags and like them but I’m noticing some of the older flower in grove bags with 62 bovidas that the flower is getting dry and crispy.

Should I move flower from grove bags to mason jars? Throw in a fresh 62 or a 58 bovida in the jar or not?

Can I throw the jars in a card box?
What temp is best for long term storage?

I’ve been reading up on those bags and apparently the reason that you don’t have to burp them is that they do allow air transfer through the bag, which seems to me that in a super dry or humid environment the weed would start to mold or dry out as soon as whatever humidity control in the bag is used up. Are other people finding this to be the case? My part of the state is crazy dry in winter and very humid in summer, so I’m not sure I could trust bags for year long storage, unless maybe if people are finding this not to be the case.

Hello,

Transferring the flower to Mason jars is a solid option. Adding a fresh 62% Boveda pack can help rehydrate the flower slightly, while a 58% pack works better if you prefer a lower humidity level.

Storing Mason jars in a cardboard box is perfectly fine, as it shields the flower from light, which helps preserve potency. Ensure the box is kept in a cool, stable environment. For long-term storage, maintain a temperature of 60-65°F (15-18°C) to slow terpene and cannabinoid degradation, and keep humidity below 65% to prevent mold.

Agreed I think on average I got about an ounce per quart jar. I like the half gallon jars for long term storage but they gotta be at least 3/4 full

The bodivas I used for years I stopped last year after hearing they can steal terps and reduce aromas and I think they are right since removing them my bud actually sees more stable and I have less loss on the nose during long term storage.

Heres a quart jar full I know my Frostette is about 1.5 oz in the same jar on average

Excellent information. Evidently I’m going to have a lot of airy buds and larf, so I expect I’ll need extra jars. Of course I’m pretty f’d up right now, so who knows. I’m brand new to weed and growing.

If you remove those lowers like @Eledin was saying that’ll massively reduce the Larf issue, larf is also great for making edibles etc.

I remove everything below the first net, the 2nd is technically the top scrog layer, and the stretchy is just what I call the “cola catcher”, you can see how far down the solid colas can go into the canopy, but anything lower than that level where my hand is at will be (in my opinion) not worth trimming, it is if you need flower, but like I said the larf has other options even if it’s just just dry sift!

Okay, so being new to weed, I would like to make edibles and tinctures, but I’d still like plenty to smoke. Should I leave those lower bud sites, or will it drastically lower the amount of good “smokeable” weed?

It will have an effect on the top cola sites if they are left on, some strains aren’t as affected by it, depends on how good the light penetration is, how the plant is health wise etc

If it’s getting enough to eat to feed everything. The lowest 1/3 of the plant I strip bare no matter what, then as was said above any branching that dosent reach the top I remove as well

If in a scrog the lowest level of net is the cutoff point anything that’s not to the net and above by day 21 gets removed

Also don’t forget the sugar leaves you trim off at harvest (not the fan leaves those are junk) can be used to make edibles etc as well

Here are some of my “lowers” that are between the 2 PVC layers, above the lower net but not quite to the top layer, early on you’d consider it larf but these are just as solid as the larger uppers, about the size of a golf ball, plenty good to trim for smoke

Get the Grove bags. And only Grove,,, don't buy the crappy knock offs.

Then get Govee meters for monitoring. You will use them more than you ever thought you would. They are delux china crap but far better than the cheap china crap.

I gotta give those grove bags a try I had some bags but I can’t remember the brand I’ll have to look when I go home, I thought those did better than bodiva packs in mason jars but I prefer the jars for long term storage (no longer using the bodivas threw em out)

4x 1/2 gallon jars and rest are quarts

well no matter how long and good you grow you will never get more than your lamps produce soo lets say you have the best leds that are out there you will with the perfect grow conditions get a max of led power200w x 2.6 grams.

the mason jars can fit a shit tone if you jam it up there but the more you jam it the more you have a chance that something somewhere is not dry enough and it will mold and infect the whole jar. i always fill them half full 5-10 grams each that way i don't put all my eggs in the same basket :D.

for long term storage i would find a cold and dark place to keep the jars in.and make sure that they are dry enough
i like using the rubber seal jars since the twist ones somethimes dont close perfectly and air comes in or out but you cant notice it

I like to remove any low leaves especially if they are shrivelling or going yellow , you dont want the plant using energy to repair them , just take em off.

be old fashion just use a mason jar _ have heard many things both good and bad about Boveda Packs - have used them before once !!- can get a mason jar lid with RH/Temp but are pricey just FYI

I put a boveda pack in a Mason jar and vacuum seal it and put all my jars in one of those styrofoam coolers you get when you order Omaha Steaks. When I go to pull some weed for my smoke jar I check the seal on all jars by taking the ring off and seeing if the lid is still tight by giving it about a pound of pull and also visually inspecting the jar contents (okay, more like admiring). Any jar a year or more older gets in line for a decarb appointment and turned into edibles. There was a time I wasn't marking or rotating jars and I didn't know what the heck I had or how old it was. Can't emphasize enough the benefit of labeling your jars with strain, harvest date and even which individual plant a jar contains. Because that's what has you going back and looking at your grow journals to see what you did right and what you might do differently next time.
