6 years ago i found a roach in a guy from works tool box. We been friends ever since. It was just regular weed. N I started getting him goods. He told me then that he had seeds put up that he is going to grow one day and it's the best weed he's ever had. Since then I've been trying to talk him into letting me grow the seeds. Finally Monday he gave me half of what he had. Now he has never n his life grown weed so these are bag seeds. His description is hawian red buds from 1978. He said the buds were mostly red and any part that wasn't was gold. He said it caused uncontrollable laughter and lasted For hours. I haven't heard of any hawian red buds but I did get some panama red in the Florida keys in 94. When I described the buds, small and very similar n look to taco meat, he said these were longer buds and the red and gold stood out.

The known...
He's been talking about his retirement strain since 2006 to me.
I have 60 tiny seeds that r brown and stripped
They have been stored in a matchbox since 1978

So the unknown...
Actual lineage.
Possibility 34 year old seeds will germinate.

My plan....
Germ "fingers crossed" 4 seeds a month looking for something special and red.

What I'm asking...
Any one that was around at that time hear of hawian red. Or what red srains were prevalent in mi at that time?

Thanks

When you say taco meat your talking with the red tint no green ? MI thats a tuff one to nail down .they used to dry it in the sun back then It could have come in from anywhere id guess columbian\panama red seeds would grow a lil diff in HI. Pop a few and find out thats the only way ur going to know for sure . C RED is a narcotic body slam high with no ceiling P red is a speedy and time distorting will give you a hangover if ya know what i mean. Sounds to me like Rooi Bart ...means red beard from south africa.. Extreamly happy smoke with a body thump and beehive buzzing in your head brain scrambler with red pistols 12-15 week flower the only one of the 3 you can do indoors tastes like red hash and lemon. pepper

Socalval, Thanks for the input. I am attempting to germ some starting today. I am curious to why you say only the rooi Bart will grow indoor? It would explain why I haven't seen many red buds. When I described the p red as taco meat yes I meant because no green at all and the buds were small, when i dumped the bag on the plate that was the first thing to come to mind. It wasn't a vibrant red it was like a dull rusty red. My mom made tacos using the cheap seasoning pack so it always had a mostly red tint to it.
I did sneak some p red ( 3 js) back to mi from the fla keys on a plane. But 94 was like a different life time as far as flying goes.

Thanks

Most likely won't germ after that long with the lack of proper care. I think without being in a freezer, or at LEAST a fridge they won't be viable. Just my opinion after reading countless articles and talking to tons of breeders on the topic. Many agree that the "shelf life" is unknown when stored properly in a freezer but not guess it to be around 10-15 years. I have heard claims of seeds from the era you speak of spouting but they were store with extreme care and germinated with such as well. Best of luck, I have my own thoughts on the old strains but we will leave that for another conversation!

Well germination is turning from speculation to realization as we speak.

Well a quick update. The first 5 beans have been in a paper towel since Monday night. They have went from Brown tiger striped to black they have gotten noticeably bigger but no tap root. I autopsied one of the beans and the shell was very hard the inside was moist and white. This makes me think I should of scuffed the beans much more before attemting to germ. I left the remaining 4 back in the paper towel and am not hopeful but still what if.... One is 2 times the size of the other 3.

55 remaining in storage

Get a little bit of bleach (drops/gal) or H2O2 and stop that mold.

Try some like seamaiden said and try some with a dilute solution of gibberellic acid look it up on google I'm not sure the exact dilution. GA has been used to germinate 1000 plus year old seeds successfully.

I have heard of the GA but haven't looked into it yet. If I waste a few seeds I will def. get some. I stumbled across this article. . I did scuff these seeds before trying to germ. Also in this article I learned that using seaweed water helps as it contains GA. Most importantly from this article I decided to use the razor blade Method on the 4 remaining seeds in the paper towel I carefully removed the shells and to my surprise one of them is a developing embryo. It's small but clearly a tap root that doubles over and u can see where the cotyledon is. It is 100% white and went right back between the paper towels. Soaking rock woll as we speak to plant it in. This is promising but no way means I will have a plant to show from the first try. Thanks for all the input and continued interest

I wish you the best of luck I had 30 Colombian gold from the 80's from brick weed of the stuff I tried to germinate and lost them all due an idiot letting them dry out.

Iv germinated super old seeds before. I let them sit in a shot glass with water and a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. You have quite a few so try a few seeds at a time and try different methods. One will hopefully eventually work out for you man. Iv smoked some old Skool strains in my day. Some were horrible compared to current day strains.....some were just as good as current day stuff but a more clear and balanced high. Monkey paw is super good but isn't the strongest. Had some gold that had amazing flavor and high but wasn't the strongest. I think with the old Skool stuff your def gonna find more sativa stains then indica depending on if it was Pre or post Vietnam. From what my dad has told me (born in 1945) the first time he really saw any type of super good seedless more body buzz type smoke was durning and after Vietnam.

Good luck with the seeds man and keep us updated.....always cool to see some stuff from the past. Sending my most positive vibes your way for the germination :) ~Smf~

Wow been a busy week between work and the garden and I haven't been online much. I see the pantheon of thcfarmers have weighed in since I last visited. Unfortunately nothing happened after removing the shells. The one that looked promising turned into mush.

I havent got the seaweed or kelp yet to try the seaweed water. Next I am planning on dropping a few in some water with a few drops of peroxide as SMF recommended. I am planning to drop a small air stone in the water to keep it fresh and add oxygenated as well.

CGK. Those buds look great!! You must have the patients of a munk or an incredible yeild to make it to a 6-8 month cure. But I bet it's worth it.

SoCal. Those must be trees to gt that tall from seed. As a kid we planted some seeds n a corn field and the 2 we found were 10-12 foot males. I can't imagine if they would have been females. (never would of finished here anyway).

I will update when I start the next batch of seeds. With all the well wishes hopefully the good karma will help out Thanks.
