YAKIMA, Wash.-- People convicted of misdemeanor marijuana offenses in the past may have the chance to clear their record.

A bill pre-filed in the state legislature last month would allow people to apply to vacate their record of pot offenses that happened before marijuana was legal.

But, there are stipulations.

The person cannot have any pending criminal charrges or have acquired any new charges since the misdemenor pot conviction. DUI charges, violent or obscene offences, or a history of domestic violence charges will also not be eligible.

The person must have completed the terms of the original sentence, including fines and rehabilitation.

KIMA spoke with one man in Yakima who thinks a lot of people could benefit if this bill passes.

"Depending on what kind of charge, it it's like trafficking or something like that maybe not but if they're just for their personal use and they're smoking it I don't see why they shouldn't be able to get rid of that charge," Jeff Baker, Yakima resident said.

Members of the legislature will consider the bill when they reconvene later this month.
