Storage Terp Bags or Mason Jars for curing and storing?

Happy New Years Growers,

I’ve been using mason jars with Boveda 62% packs for curing and storing cannabis, and I’ve been happy with the results. However, I’ve noticed that storage Terp Bags seem like a more cost-effective solution. My concern with the Terp Bags is that the seal may not be as airtight as a mason jar, which could lead to faster degradation of the cannabis quality.

Do you have any advice or suggestions regarding using mason jars versus Terp Bags for long-term storage?

I can tell you what we do. After the buds are done with the drying tent, we put them in Grove bags in a dark place with steady temperature and humidity. They stay there for a month or more. Then we put them in dark-glass, wide-mouth Mason jars. They stay there till we grind them for our vaporizers. That process works well for us.

Very timely topic for me as well. As of this morning, I have my first plant cut and hanging. So far I have brown glass Mason jars and I bought a pile of grove bags, so I have 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz bags. In hind sight, it seems that it would have been wiser to just get bigger bags to cure the whole batch.

I will be watching this thread to learn what is working for you all!

I just looked at the prices of the colored mason jars and they are steep. Makes the Grove bag more appealing. But yea, I would probably go with bags that hold at least an ounce and maybe up to 4 ounces.

When I finally learned how to burp them jars right I finally got something to smoke that was smooth and tasty. Then I learned about grove bags / terp bags and I thought it had to be bullshit. I mean shit, since I first smoked weed in the late 70's I'd heard that baggies are a terrible place to put your weed. But there is a whole science behind how they provide a stable microclimate and a perfect environment for curing weed.

Well I've never tried curing with these engineered poly bags and wanted to try it so I asked Santa for a couple for Christmas and hot damn that jolly old red stoner came through for me. Unfortunately I just flipped my current girls so I'll have to wait until March to try them out.

You gave me an idea. Santa brought me curing bags for Christmas. For scientific posterity, I'm thinking maybe I'll split my curing and try both methods my next harvest and document my results.

We've been using 16-ounce Grove bags. We also reuse them. We bought a dozen several years ago and still have some that haven't been used yet. We also put hygrometers in with the weed.

The bags really do work well, I just don't like constantly opening them as the flimsy zippers fail easily. Jars for the head stash, bags for the heat seal and forget! xD

Well, I must have been high when I ordered my brown glass jars... I swear that I got them for $20 on amazon... I just looked at my orders and the "Yodecy 12 count, 32 ounce wide mouth brown jars with lids" was actually $40. So, I have just figured out that blazing some jazz cabbage and then shopping online is like a 50% off coupon (in my head anyway)

I use the bags for curing and then move the weed to jars.

Once I started using Grove Bags, never even thought about using a jar again. No burping required and no boveda packs required. Grove bags are reusable also.

You can heat seal Grove bags and they even sell vacuum rolls now.

I like the window bags, you can put the cheap hygrometers in the window so you can see humidity without opening the bag.

It's important to buy the Grove Bag brand, there's bags that look like Grove but are absolute garbage so be careful when buying.

You can buy straight from Grove Bags website, they're out of Ohio.
If you're in the USA I recommend buying from Happy Hydro, price per bag is cheaper and shipping costs only $5 if only ordering the bags.

I got some “darker” colored glass storage jars with the plastic lids and little colored band to go around the jar. I was under the impression that a darker color jar or container vs a clear jar would help with light degradation of trichomes i just took it as if im supposed to dry in the dark because it makes a difference then maybe I should store my “out on the bench top smoking stash” in these darker colored jars. could all just be bro science also hahaha lol. I go through those stash jars to quickly for them to sit out and get ruined by long exposure to sun and light LOL!

Ill use groves for the 1st few weeks, then into gallon jars- If they have to stay in the grove bags or wickets, longer storage - I store them in Gamma Lid Buckets - air tight seal - examples in link - cheaper if you search around mine are old, bought from a supply company...

I know folks who use clear glass jars, and they aren't complaining. The difference in price wasn't much, though, so I bought the dark glass thinking that it wouldn't hurt to have some insurance. We keep our buds in the dark starting from the day we harvest.
