prpr/amf and other microbes need lots of root mass to establish a symbiotic colony on; chemical ferts doesn't need too much root mass.

There have been test done with a product called "Biochar" in which NO nutrients were needed at ALL!

"Biochar" is simply taken from terra preta, a technology that has been forgotten and we're still trying to tease apart fully what went into it. One of the reasons that biochar works so well is that it's actually like a development for bacteria and microbes.

What's interesting about this paper is that I (we?) typically associate beneficial soil microbes for most of our plants as being mycorrhizea. I typically associate Rhizobacteria as being for beans (legumes). I keep forgetting to inoculate my bush beans with Rhizos.

These are but another member of the healthy soil food web. Great read, thanks!

Interesting about the bio-char. I actually use a small amount upon flowering transplanted pots. I will use this more often. Cool ass study and read as well.
