Hello everyone, I have been a member for about a year, I mostly have been lurking in the background, finding most all the helpful information I need, I have been smoking for 30 years and just got tired of paying high prices for low quality smoke, I have been growing for 3 years and I consider myself a beginner. I have two questions I know some of you experts can help me with. When I start seedlings I soak the seeds for 12-24 hours and then put them in rapid rooters, I usually put the seeds in sideways because I don't know which end of the seed the tap root comes out, #1 can anyone show a picture of a seed pointing to the end where the tap root will come out, #2 Before I found this site, I bought 300.00 worth of seeds from the Attitude and most all of the were from Green House Seeds, I put them in water to soak for 24 hours, during that time not one seed of the Super Lemon Haze sunk to the bottom so I stirred the good and waited an hour and they were all still floating, so I went ahead and put them in the rapid rooters and it has been 5 days and I still don't have one seed that has cracked open, does it sound like I done anything wrong? Has anyone else had any problems with Green House Seeds? I also tried white widow and ams the AMS came up a couple of weeks ago but it don't look like it has grow any since it sprouted, the Querkle I planted at the same time is 10 bigger, its like it wont grow, and the 80.00 worth of super lemon haze wont even crack there shell. Can someone help me, Is it me or Green House seeds? Thanks guys I enjoy reading your threads, they are very helpful.

pretty sure it's the seeds. make sure they stay warm and moist. i've had some hard-shelled seeds take two weeks pop. you coulda scuffed em or use a razor to make a tiny score along the spine.

which way is up? well think of it like a peice of fruit. the top is the round part where it was attached at one time within the calyx. the bottom is that pointed part. if they pop and the tail curves upward the point of the tail would go in pointing up. does this make sense?

I just happen to have a pict handy of a tap root sprouting out of a seed. (sorry it's blurry camera phone) I personally prefer germing in moist paper towels, but everyone has their favorite method.

Capo's advice is good:

Keeping the paper towel WARM and moist will speed things up. I always wait until the tap root sprouts before planting.

I have learned ya place the tip down as the tap will sprout and wrap around the seed then shoot down..meenwhile lifting up the cadalones poping outta soil..i did tests and found it dont matter what way ya place the seed..but found if ya place the tap down it will do much better then on the side or up...also found that if ya germ in paper towel need to plant after tap has shown..if the root is too long plant doensnt do as well..just my thaughts..take care and be safe

It doesnt matter which direction you plant them. seeds dont fall point down in nature, drop a handfull and see. The seed knows where it wants to be so let it do its thing.

Thanks CAPO, PureSugar,4u2sm0ke, Rysam, I can tell now top from bottom, I have used the paper towel method before and it works great but they can dry out to easy if you don't watch them or the tail breaks to easy, I have killed more this way by breaking the tail when putting it in the medium. have any of you ever had problems with Green House Seeds? I must have got a old batch because the ones that have cracked took 6-7 days and others still have not done anything, the super lemon haze soaked for 24 hours and not a one of them sunk to the bottom, I have always heard if they don't sink that there not viable. most of the seeds I have used are from Subcool and they seem to always crack in 1-3 days. thanks again for your help, when my chocolope gets close I will post some pics.

Totally agree... and that seed was planted a few mins after that pict was taken.

You are right roots do automatically "know" to grow downward and they always do, however, it's better (not necessary) for a plant to have the main food and water intake "pipe" to have a straight entry to the plant than to have a 180 or 360 degree bend in it.

....I have used the paper towel method before and it works great but they can dry out to easy if you don't watch them or the tail breaks to easy, I have killed more this way by breaking the tail when putting it in the medium.

I keep the paper towel just barely submerged under water so they stay very wet. You shouldn't wait until the root is any bigger than in the above pict before planting in your medium, that should eliminate breaking the root when planting.

I don't personally have any experience with Green House Seeds but I've never heard anything good about them. Since I don't use the soak in a cup method of germinating I can't comment on the sinking to the bottom thing.

I was wonderin if those beans from GH are the colored beans?

Some farmers like to place in soil to germinate and they really don't want to waste time waitin for the plant to right itself. Me personally, I'm not so patient. mine get placed in flat plastic chinese food containers in tap water soaked paper towels and placed ontop of my cable box.
The majority of em usually pop around the same time. I chuck the rest as in my experience they're gonna be stragglers anyway. If I paid cash for them, I'm more patient w/ the slower ones.

For me it's all about vigor.
As far as being one to plant as soon as they crack- no way- I keep em warm and wet. I let em sprout, peel off the shell (if ready) and put em in cups. Then I let em stretch for a week then repot burying the stem half way.
When I go from bean I ain't in no hurry and add 5 weeks compared to a cloning gro.

Jimmellow.... I suggest you do what you gotta do to get some PROPER gear here at the farm. Swerve or OGRaskal will do fo sho.
I got Swerve's CVK and Raskal OG to pop 100% all within 24 hrs.
Talk about some vigor.

See ya round the boards...capo

Thanks, Capo the super lemon haze don't have a color coating on them, I did get a pack with 5 different strains and they are color coded but I have not tried any of those yet, I did crack 5 Querkle from Subcool and all five sprouted within 2 days and I have one of the strangest out of that bunch I have never seen before, It has 2 tap roots coming out of it, I have never seen that before, it will be interesting to see how that one turns out.
