What are your intentions for the grow? You say you want to be able to get around them...? If you are interested in doing a SCROG, then I would say yes (even if you don't use a trellis). Top your plant near the 5th node and keep your plants apart, but, if you don't control the growth with a SCROG, your plant will have different areas of lights closest to the lights than from the bottom of the plant and this will drastically change how buds will develop if the plant is not shaped to stay open so that light you provide ( your driving force) is not distributed evenly.
