Curious what a good veg distance when using t5 lights?

Once my plants have an established root system and can handle all the photosynthesis of intense light, should I basically try to get my plants as close as I can to the t5's (3-6 inches)?

I put a thermometer near the canopy and keep the temp 80 or below an don't ever have any problems they can touch touch the light if there is hella air flow. I move mine away about 6-8 inches it gives its a good spread. Compact fluorescents give off such a good light spectrum they don't have to be as intense but I only recommend them for vegging. BTW I use HID for seedlings put it 50 inches away it will not burn I even do clones under them I need the heat.
