The only real way to kill them here, is directly (also not easy, theyre hard as fuck and difficult to squish), or move them somewhere else lmao.

Earwigs are the bane of my san pedro plants. the only things i cant kill or totally get rid of, no matter what i try. it's maddening how hardy those little fuckers are. They can literally take bites out of marigolds and Mums and still be all good. They'll eat alkaloid-rich dark flesh of a san pedro like its bacon 0.o

You are waging war against the most adaptable, resilient, and longest lasting species of complex life this planet has ever seen. More successful then any other species that has ever evolved here. They evolved before ants did. Theyre 250 million years old already. Unchanged. They are THAT good at surviving.

Good thing they dont swarm or make colonies bigger then a few dozen individuals usually. It's their only saving grace imho. you can spray pyrethrins down, and theyll literally come drink it like a dog, then go back into the pot completely unharmed. You cant even kill them with neurotoxins 🤣 🙃


And yea no joke, 9/10 times i see "snail or slug" damage on someone's plants, i see NO slime trails lmao. Most havent a clue what theyre dealing with when earwigs are involved. Every time you have "ghost bugs" walking past DE, surviving pesticides, and no signs of beetles or rodents or slime trails..... EARWIGS. every time.

Im honestly a little surprised how often i turn people on to the earwig concern. Most gardeners never even have a passing thought about an ear wig because they do everything at night, when damage is generally assumed to be beetles, rodents, or slugs. If youre fighting any of those, when you actually have earwigs though, you wont actually accomplish anything. You have to physically remove, or physically kill them by hand/foot to make them go away. DE and plant safe pesticides wont do shit to an earwig.. if you dont kill them, you have to move them to a better spot then they were too, or they WILL come back to the very same pot within a few days, DE circles or not. And sometimes eggs hatch (which pesticides cant kill either) and theyre back in like a week anyway. And most growers never even figure out whats up.

Part of the reason i dont use containers with cannabis outdoors at all anymore is how many earwigs are out here and how sdmall i like to wean plants into full sun. I have to pull the plant out of the pot and cut away the bottom couple inches of soil from the ball, then repot to remove the nest when it happens. They can take out young plants to the ground in a few hours if its a big nest. if ya dont get rid of it, by mid summer youll have an earwig nest in every pot sat directly on ground here.


i find it pretty funny actually. My single most hated pest is earwigs, and most garneders never even bat an eye because they dont realize theyre doing damage at all. In most cases in my experience directly, the *majority* of a growers night time damage to small plants is actually earwigs literally living in the bottom of the container itself. like 8/10 times a seedling is ate to the ground and the soil wasnt dug into, it was actually earwigs that did it in my experience. Same with snail and slug damage but no slime trails. More earwigs

YUP! Earwigs. From the Permian extinction to mass volcanic extinctions, to the dinosaur impact, one organism barely even flinched. Earwigs.

Put them in a pure c02 atmosphere for 20 minutes... long after they all stop moving. Let em out and most will wake back up in a few mins and go about their business. They're the tardigrades of the insect world.

the most effective way to kill an earwig, is between a brick or a shoe, and a concrete slab. And there's a very real probability they'll walk away from that alive too.


if you could withstand impact force like an earwig, you could literally survive being smacked by the empire state building and just walk away limping.

Ants can lift 50x their own weight? That's cute. You can roll a basketball over an earwig on concrete and it wont even notice. They can support thousands of times their own body weight and their chitin wont even crease and they can still move around.


The most successful species of complex life is not humans though. Not even close. It's not ants or flies either like many think. Not even close, not even comparable.

YUP! Earwigs.



Oh yea... earwigs can also survive HUNDREDS of times more radiation then cockroaches and flies. An earwig can actually survive a nuclear blast too, so long as its shielded from the infrared heat at initial detonation just by being under a surface rock of sufficient mass. Just ask the scientists of Los Alamos.


Theyre stealthy as shit too. Most people dont ever even realize theyre battling ear wigs when they are. Whether they win or loose the battle, they never even knew what it was they were fighting. They outsmart humans *all the time* . Really, that's what they are best at.

They look like they were built buy different insects being fused together.
The head of an ant
The body looks like a hybrid combination of a cricket and stone fly
The pinchers of a Dobsonfly for a tail.

Ever gone to smash an earwig, then watched it scurry off like nothing happened after the direct hit?

Very very few animals impress me more then earwigs. They are one of my greatest banes where i live now. But i respect the hell out of them, tbh. They have earned their right to be on the tree of life countless times over.

Earwigs even self limit their own populations to prevent causing damage by growing in numbers too much. Pretty karma-free organism right there. If they were colony based like ants, there would be no such thing as mass-agriculture at all. There would basically be impossible to kill locust swarms everywhere but Antarctica. If there's no need to replenish numbers, they reproduce more slowly. Most animals go nuts in times of plenty and times of scarcity both, and ruin everything they touch in that context. When things go unstable egosystems and niches completely reorganize themselves entirely, and extinctions happen, new philogenies emerge.

Not with earwigs, they figured out the game a loooooooooong time ago. They let everything else muck around with all the uncertainty, and they just be earwigs, like they always have been. if it aint broke, dont fix it, etc.


A strange but honest statement: Earwigs are among the most Zen of all insects. Earwigs, mantises, and Dragonflies. I consider them special things. They day you make direct eye contact with an insect and can tell it's actually looking back in your eye, is a special day and it changes you.


This is why i dont subscribe to that total bullshit fear of extra terrestrial races looking at us like an insect that you would just smash. That is truly unaware, childlike thinking... The more aware i become, the more stuff like that matters to me. The more likely i am to save a drowning worm, or make direct eye contact with a "lesser being" as they would probably call it. If there's a civilizaton capable of coming here, they figured the thing out collectively a LOOOOOONG time ago too. Just like the earwigs. That fear stems from the FACT that we, collectively, have not figured the thing out yet.

i treat ant colonies as sentient individuals though. And i treat earwigs, mantises, certain arachnids, and dragonflies the same. If you can make eye contact back when i make it with you, i consider you an individual. straight up. Theres a mutual recognition that comes with making eye contact with something. And it' so innate and immediately understood, some organisms feel threatened when it happens unexpectedly.

Thanks bro. Gotta be a growin’ fool up here or I’d go crazy. I’ve got it wired on the inside and an extension cord that runs to an outside outlet. Plain white paint is coming summer 2025. I can’t stand that Mylar film. It was better than a wood panel wall but the hotspots are crazy.

Btw idr if I mentioned it in all my earwigs ranting. But you can actually use the fact they're way smarter then most other bugs against em.

Even at night an earwig won't usually cross open, exposed concrete surfaces more then a few inches, maybe 6. Especially if their group is small. Don't have pots directly against walls, and don't leave them any cover near the pots. Make getting to the pot risky for something like an earwigs and it won't do it. Their intelligence is very mantis-like. And you can also spread out a piece of steel wool and set the cups on it and they won't get into the holes to make a nest. If using pots you can stick a little tuff of it in the holes after you fill it up. By the time it rises away you won't have to worry about the earwigs anymore.

Most plant safe pesticides won't kill them, and they can cross DE. And I put my plants on the ground last night to water them and forgot about em lmao. The best earwig defense though is to bring your seedlings inside right before it gets dark and don't put them back outside till it's daylight.

Just for funnies, I also think earwigs look really creepy from a distance, but up close I think they look kind of adorable
