Where i live we are supposed to have the best water as it comes from a mountain aquifer. Well add in a few issues and now they are chlorinating our water pretty heavy.
I also live at the absolute start of the Sacramento River. I think i will try to be diligent and source my water there. Seems like it would be great for my plants. Lots of good minerals for my babies.

You should be able to get a water report from your supplier that breaks Down the contaminants that it contains and their concentrations! Probably can get it online! Then decide whether it is bad enough to deal with! You might get tired of lugging water, especially in the summer! Hose end RV water filters are cheap and claim to remove 99% of the chlorine! Don’t know about the chloramine! Might be worth researching! And I think ascorbic acid can be a temporary fix! Too bad they’re screwing up your beautiful Water! That was one of That area is claims to fame! I have a well, so don’t really Have to deal with it and haven’t researched it much!

The amount of chlorine used isn't significant enough to cause any problems. Chlorine will have a very short term effect on soil microbe numbers for about a day, then they'll bounce back to normal levels.

Not all spring water is created the same, some is great, other times it's not. It's all dependent on the parent rock the water flows through. The local water Co. should have a breakdown of whats in the water. Go from there. I have spring water, it's way high in Ca, Mg, Mn, B and Fe, comes out the tap at 1400 PPM's, making it totally unsuitable for hydro/coco.

I use tap water/city water nothing wrong with it.
i grow in recirculating hydro & prefer 0 ppm RO water so i know exactly what is in it when i mix my nutes, although i have used 300-400 ppm city water in the past (atter off-gassing) with no ill effects

Might be worth looking into depending on where you’re at up there! I know it’s a big area! If you’re hell-bent on Freezing your ass off!😆👍

i spent many years both laying water mains and painting water towers. the epa sets maximum tds levels @ 500 ppm. these are however non-mandatory guidelines (whatever the fuck that is) for aesthetic effects like taste, odor, and appearance. while water above 500 ppm may not pose an immediate health risk, it can have a salty taste or cause mineral buildup in pipes and appliances (i quit drinking city water after my stint as a water tower painter🤢🤮🤑)

I use my tap water and it smells worse than a chlorinated public pool! I have let my bucket sit over night with desired results but rarely do that! I may start after this next run to see how things change if at all. But I’ve read here where no one seems to bother with doing anything about it and is just fine.

put an airstone in the bucket should evaporate in an hour or so

Im interested in this! The only reason I dont let my bucket of water sit over night is I l dont like messing with it that much! Hahah! I could totallly get the water a few hours before watering and let that sit before watering! Great idea!

could maybe try this.👍

Our tap water comes out at 7.2 pH and smells like the YMCA in the early 80’s. I fill my jugs the night before around 7:00 p.m. and mix nutes at 5:00 am. The water has no more chlorine smell when the morning comes. ✌️

Depends on pollution, humans ruin things. Just agitate the water with a air stone and it will remove the chlorine amd chloramine

Do they also use chloramine? Because chloramine doesnt evaporate. Leaving the water in an open container so the chlorine evaporates for 1-2 days is my go to. But once that happened (and not before because then it would react with the chlorine and I would need much more) I add a dash of hydrogen peroxide which will break down the chloramine once the chlorine is evaporated and let it rest for 1 more day so all the hydrogen peroxide and chloramine are gone. Will that cause an undesired reaction? No, the result is a very small ammount of amonia that the plant converts into nitrogen. Does it really make a difference? I would say yes. Maybe not removing it is not bad enough to cause visible problems but that doesnt mean your microorganisms and roots like it as mentioned already.
EDIT: Also its very cool, you can tell it works because once you add the hydrogen peroxide the water starts to release gases, try adding hydrogen peroxide to freshly collected tap water and smell it, smells like a pool+bleach (chlorides+amonia being released)

I just did that and you’re dead right.

Oh I forgot to mention, you can also leave them in the sun for the chlorine and chloramine to break down. I dont have access to direct sunlight thats why I use hydrogen peroxide. That said, Im not informed on how long it takes for the UV to break down chlorides but this should help:
"The sun's ultraviolet rays can cut down the chlorine concentration by 90% in as little as two hours. And on very hot days, the chlorine will deplete faster, becoming a cesspool for bacteria."
For chloramine it should be a bit longer but not much more, that would explain why in open public pools theyre constantly dumping chlorides nonstop.

The first time I did it the smell was so pungent that I swore never to use it again untreated. I have to prepare my water 3 days in advance but with 8 liters jugs is really no big deal, I keep a few prepared and I rotate them, the new ones go to the untreated side, the dechlorinated ones go in the middle and the dechlorinated and dechloraminated ones go to the side closest to the door so I dont forget those are the ones ready to go. I live in a rural area so they dump a lot of chlorides into the water because the farms contaminate the water.
