And it's opening up in Sacramento. Do you like to read Weed Wars? Peter Hecht does decent reporting on all things cannabis.

Debuting in Sacramento, the Wal-Mart of weed

The Wal-Mart of weed is coming to Sacramento.

At least that's the moniker embraced by weGrow, a cavernous hydroponics store enthusiastically marketing itself as a retail outlet for people cultivating marijuana for personal medicinal use.

The 10,000-square-foot weGrow store, which opens Saturday at 1537 Fulton Ave., is the first national franchise for a company that bills itself as a supply and training destination for legal pot growers.

The enterprise, started in Oakland last year as a warehouse store called iGrow, and doesn't sell any marijuana.

Yet the gardening emporium attracted national attention for its unbridled embrace of the marijuana culture. It featured an on-site doctor offering medical pot recommendations and sales staff eagerly pitching grow lights and nutrients while teaching people how to raise bountiful cannabis buds.

The Oakland location is being reorganized as a non-retail distribution hub for a network of retail hydroponics outlets. The Sacramento store – billed as "the first honest hydro store" – is to be followed by weGrow stores in Arizona, Colorado, New Jersey and Oregon in coming months.

"I just thought it was a statement to have something close to the state Capitol," said Dhar Mann, who founded the original iGrow in January 2010. "It's a statement of how progressive the industry has become. We're all about coming out of the shadows."

With California, 14 other states and the District of Columbia legalizing marijuana for medical use, the hydroponics industry is exploding. But, unlike weGrow, most hydroponics outlets avoid any mention of marijuana, billing themselves only as generic suppliers for people growing anything from peppers to rosemary.

Hydroponics stores traditionally are leery of any mention of marijuana because pot cultivation remains illegal under federal law.

The 'm' word is also avoided by some growing equipment and nutrient suppliers that either operate in states where medical marijuana is illegal – or don't want to offend organic farmers or other customers growing nonmedicinal products.

"We're very strict. We don't sell equipment for the purpose of growing marijuana," said Chris Corsello, manager of J Street HydroGarden in midtown Sacramento. He said if anyone asks for tips on growing pot, "We say, 'Sorry, we can't tell you anything.' "

Michael Garcia, operator of the Sacramento weGrow franchise, said employees will talk about marijuana once customers show proof of a physician's recommendation for medical use. "If you do not have a script, we're not willing to discuss cannabis with you," he said.

For those who do, weGrow will offer on-site classes in marijuana cultivation. It also promotes its online "University of Cannabis."

On Saturday, the store will celebrate its place in the medicinal pot industry with a noon to 4 p.m. expo featuring medical marijuana suppliers and support businesses.
"We want to bring awareness to this community," Garcia said. "It's already there. We're just bringing it to the forefront."
What else can I say except, maybe, be there or be square? How groovy is *that*?
:harvest:

Cool! My only gripe is the WalMart comparison. Much would've preferred a Costco reference. That personal problem aside, I can't wait to see what the WalMartians are gonna :fighting0040::party0044::character0029::harvest::boogie::joint::tongue0011:look like in that store.

i think somebodys got themselves a hell of a marketing team
maybe more of the Best Buy of weed?
id feel horrible if they make some 90 year old lady carry out dirt for somebodys outdoor run
or grandpa in a wheelchair stacked 10 high wit reflectors
yea, lets go with Best Buy

hopefully the parking lot is big enough of all the jackers to tailgate before they follow you home and rape your children

lol they call it "wal mart" of weed but u have to get verified to say "marijuana"

im sure theyll make a ton, but id rather buy online

my local store sucks and has horrible advice

online is where its at, both for buying and trading info

I tend to stay away from `Walmarts`.

Nice

Still too far away for me. My local hydro stores and such price everything up.

...taking odds on how long it takes for this place to be busted for Aiding in a Criminal Enterprise and Conspiracy to Manufacture a Controlled Substance, Raided and all their credit card transactions confiscated...etc etc.

how do i make a poll?

hopefully the parking lot is big enough of all the jackers to tailgate before they follow you home and rape your children

oh shit ...:confused0054:'

seems to be as legal as a hydro store, shouldn't have any problems state wise, or federally. If their prices and service are better than local stores, then they will succeed and put other places out of business.

aiding and ebeding in the production of narcotics

It's gonna be REAL hard for the big hydro manufacturers like Hydrofarm and Sunlight to avoid being connected with "marijuana"....something they have strived to do (and they make you sign an agreement that you won't sell to pot growers as a retailer to get their wholesale license) since thier inception.

Someday they will decide that you only need one brand of nutrient (theirs) and will only be able to buy one brand of light (theirs) and will only have one choice of a strain to grow (theirs)....but fuckin A...as long as it's >cheap< it's all OK...right?

You watch.....they'll probably drug test their employes too.

corporate sucks

...and space for the undercovers to take license plate pictures. "Paranoia strikes deep...."

Sactown has already had a few suits launched against them for these sorts of tactics. I have NO idea how many people are actually followed home from the hydro shop to be raped and robbed, but the thought is amusing. I mean, seriously, who has the time? Quicker to steal copper wiring.

How about a Costco of Weed? Best Buy is ok, but BB can suck sometimes.

its a cool idea i guess, a few hydro shops really over charge here in sac and there selection sucks, I often have to go between 3 hydro shops+ homedepot to get what I need and that often can be a pain.

I prefer never to go into walmart or homedepot but when I got to pay 15 bucks for mosquito dunks at the hydro store or pay 9.95 at walmart or homedepot they tend to win, it be interesting to see the prices of this "walmart of weed".

Our local shop, which sucked greasy ass, finally closed up after being in business for less than a year. So incredibly overpriced, incredibly underknowledged, I only used them as a last resort.

People in NorCal, does your local Raley's carry any Fox Farm nutes? Mine does, and for a damn good price, too, very competitive. How do you feel about buying your nutes at your local (chain, corporate, likely unionized) market? Got a problem with something like that? Never mind, of course, being able to ask the bag-girl if she thinks you should use Cha-Ching over Big Bloom or why one is organic and nothing else is...

I fear the po-po more than I do anyone else, especially the idea of them being able to follow me home. I can see it happening in certain situations, but not so much in mine, not considering the distance that would have to be traveled.

people do indoor gardening with tomatoes and such
you know the recession is bad when the news reads this
"local family butt raped and robbed for hydroponics tomatoes"
