I guess not many people ever heard of him, unless you're from Spain and belong to the canna community. Gaspar Fraga passed away last friday, after a battle with lung cancer. He was one of the main and best loved contributors from the largest spanish speaking forum, cannabiscafe, known there as Freaky.
But he was, of course, much more than that. He was one of the main activists who didn't care to risk his freedom as long as he got his message through, not in vain was he the first person imprisoned in Spain for cannabis possession, Franco's body still warm. He was a fuckin' rebel in the true sense of the word, before prison and specially after prison, when years later he defied all odds and published what it was the first cannabis related mag in Spain, El Cáñamo, still the most read of all in offer.
He appeared in every debate, tv, radio, magazine he could for fighting the rights we have today in Spain, still a lot to do but fairly a good comparative stance about cannabis laws against other countries, and we owe a good part to him, for adding natural elegance where it was needed. Yet his message wasn't that of a populist nor a provincial candidate for delivering demagogic messages, cannabis was the path he chose to deliver a more international pray, that of the attitude of holding to the top against those who will push you to the top anyway, in whatever position you might achieve. He wasn't a would be guru neither, pretty normal sunday newspaper reader breakfast appreciative soft classical music kinda guy, prone to share his thoughts and stories with everyone at the cannabiscafe forums, where he always had, still has, massive positive feedback and virtually no enemies.
He was 65. His last post was days before his decease, all descriptive, not lacking humor, but having accepted it, a lesson to us all. A good one gone, but a lot of good work left done. Save your prayers, as he was a declared atheist, smoke a big spliff to his memory more like.
