SAN SIMEON, CALIF. — Authorities say they've seized tons of marijuana and arrested eight people who allegedly smuggled the pot ashore from a boat in Central California.
San Luis Obispo County sheriff's deputies say that around 3:30 a.m. Thursday, they saw a van in a San Simeon area known for smuggling. Authorities say they stopped the van and found it contained 2,000 to 3,000 pounds of marijuana in bales.
The driver was arrested. Investigators then searched the coastline north to the Monterey County line and found a 35-foot boat abandoned on the beach.
Around 8:30 a.m., they arrested five people near the Piedras Blancas lighthouse.
A second van containing more than a ton of baled marijuana was later stopped by Monterey County officials south of Carmel and the occupants arrested.
