Any tips? Daytime or lights out? Wet or dry? I’m going from solo cups to coffee cans, don’t judge. Some will end up inground, 5 gal buckets or felt bags.

Daytime is fine you need to see what your doing , plant need to be fairly dry just squeeze around the solo cup and pop it out in your hand then pot it up size pot or bag then water till good run off PH correct water .

One of the reasons i asked was i did one this afternoon with lights on it drooped, tonight i did another and the leaves are still up. I got twenty more so i’ll try a couple each way to see.

Oh sorry I got you yes do them and lights out I leave mine in dark for 24 hr sorry for not understand you better .

Hey madbud ,when i transplant from solo cups to larger , cans in your case , i would make sure you punch holes in can for proper drainage , i would also take the soil , or whatever medium you are adding , and pre moisten it seperately ...

I would squeeze it or just slowley moisten it so not soaked or even " wet" i would then use that fresh moist soil to fill bottom of new container , drop your root ball in and pack sides with fresh soil ..

I wouldn't soak it to runoff , it will stress the roots and they might not grow fast enough , so can get waterlogged and sit in mud drowning ...
Just my opinion , othets may disagree

i agree. i only water to runoff when there is a root system that desires that.

I do it before dark because its good for the roots and less stress if they stay in dark for a couple of hours after the procedure.Like when i cut and make clones i usually put them in dark right after that.It eases the rooting as far as i know.but it also feels that way to me.
There should be no transplant shock when you transplant to bigger pot,it should be improovment.Easier if the small plants are little bit rootbound(just a little) and the cup is full of roots.
Transplant shock is just gardener's mistake.:)

I don't care lights on or off. I don't seem to get transplant shock unless I drop the plant or damage it somehow. I squeeze the sides of the pot all the way around then tap the bottom of it, grasp the stalk between your fingers and flip the pot over supporting the soil and plant. Then gently place in the larger pot.

I like to do it when I see the soil separating from the pot around 3-4 days after watering and it needs feed or water depending on cycle.

I fill my new 3 gallon half way then drop an extra pot I'm transplanting out of into the large pot then fill around that pot tapping the soil around it. Then carefully place the plant in the hole created. Trying not to touch the roots. When I do it this way I don't see any shock, I don't think the plant knows its been transplanted if I'm gentle with them and all they know is they have room to grow now.

I then feed or water as needed to help seat the plant into its new home.

I cut the bottoms out of the cans and put the plastic lid on the bottom, any runoff seeps out and makes the next transplant a lot easier. Dig a hole, take the lid off the bottom and she slides right out the bottom into the hole. I really need to cut a length of 8” pvc pipe into 8-10” sections, then cap the bottoms for reusable planters but the cans are readily available and mostly giveaway plants.

Wait til it's dry then water the hell out of it in the new pot. You want to wash medium back into all the contact points. This is the only method that doesn't cause a growth delay.
You’re right Rip, a watered root ball is easier to handle but dry into fresh damp soil gets the roots moving.

I find I need a bit of moisture in it otherwise the soil on the top falls away and I end up with a hand full of roots and a shakey lose stalk. I'll even add a touch of water to the top just to keep it bonded if its too dry.

It doesn’t seem to matter as long as the roots are healthy. The perlite on the bottom and that dry top layer fall away but only a few seconds later the roots are immersed in warm damp nutritious ffof.

been watering some from the bottom, seems to work ok too.

Is it ok to uppot to 5gal sack from Jiffy pod? I don't want to go the solo cup route, I mostly hate plastic.
