Two men have been jailed after being convicted of operating a cannabis farm with an estimated street value of £1m.

Mahmood Anwar, aged 51, of Pullman Street, Rochdale, was jailed for 18 months after pleading guilty to producing cannabis.

Mujahid Ishaq, aged 26, of Cumbrae Road, Levenshulme, was sentenced to 21 months' imprisonment after pleading guilty to being concerned in the production of cannabis and possession with intent to supply.

They were both sentenced at Bolton Crown Court yesterday.

Shortly after 10.30am on January 31, officers raided an industrial unit at Bishop Street, Rochdale.

As soon as they entered the property officers saw hundreds of cannabis plants at various stages of growth. There were large bags of cannabis in plastic bags that had been grown and dried out, as well as plants hanging from the walls to dry out.

They also found a large amount of cannabis cultivating equipment including lighting, tanks full of water, a drainage system and a large quantity of wiring and plug sockets.

As the officers forced their way into another ground floor room they saw an old damaged toilet. As they got further into the room they suddenly saw a pair of legs disappear from behind the toilet into what looked like a neighbouring room.

Officers went into the neighbouring unit and found Anwar and Ishaq, who were both covered in dirt.

They were then arrested and interviewed.

Detective Inspector Daryl Chadwick of GMP's Rochdale Division said: "This operation has resulted in a vast amount of drugs being stopped from hitting the streets.

"Drugs contribute to all manner of criminal offences and removing the people responsible for supplying them is essential."
