Wondering what size pump to get ? They have 1.5 up to 7.
Also should it be a 1 stage or 2 stage?
Most of the youtube stuff Ive watched has 2.5's. Looking for some opinions with experience on this.;)
 
If you have a choice, go with the 2 stage instead of the 1 stage. you will get a much deeper pull with the 2 stage and it's a LOT less noisy too.

Also, depending on how much you are going to be blasting each run, I'd just go with a simple 2 stage/ 3cfm pump.
When I bought mine at Harbor Freight, I just simply copied and printed their 20% discount coupon online and by doing so, I was basically able to get my 2 year NO questions asked warranty for free. ;)

Both our single and dual stage pumps are quieter when they pull down. The dual stage does not have a second motor that kicks in, as suggested by the U-tube. The reason the pump quieted down, was it was starting to reach hard vacuum.

The reason that he was having difficulties starting up the 2 stage, is that he started it up with the hose connected. When you start one up and it is choking on oil like his was, remove the hose and let the pump pull free air and clear itself.

Lastly, my 6.2 cfm pump has me spoiled. It is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay faster than the 2.5 cfm pumps demonstrated. The single stage may be louder, but you don't have to string the experience out over several minutes, when a decent size pump gets it done forthwith.
 
Well I ended up buying one off Amazon. Two stage 3.9 cfm a little over $100 with shipping. I also picked up a Vacuum chamber from a co. here in michigan $180.00 plus shipping. Gave me some free sample bottles too.;)

We just ordered a used 12 X 14 X 9" Napc0 vacuum oven off E-bay at about what our glass dessicator and hot plate cost new. You might check them out!

This post need a bump. Harbor Freight sells a pretty decent 2 stage pump 3 cfm pump (pittsburgh brand) that pulls a stronger vacuum than my Mastercool 6 cfm single stage pump. Get the warranty. These shitty rotary vane pumps will break.

Yup Harbor Freights shitty little pumps do break in this application, and they continue to replace them, so as long as their sense of humor lasts, it is an avenue that works.

We still have the NAPCO oven we refurbished, and are also using Cascade TEK TV-02 vacuum ovens, with Welch 2052 chemical duty diaphragm pumps.

We are using a Welch 1405 on our Kugelrohr, and a Welch Chemstar Dry on our molecular still.

WolfWurx has gone from the CM 6.2 rotary vane pump to vacuum down the Terpenator systems before injection, to a 6 cfm Vaccon venturi vacuum, pulling to -29.5" Hg, so as to eliminate electric pumps all together for NEMA 7, Class 1, Div 1 electrical installations.

@Graywolf For the people that are vac purging in ovens and not doing some crazy shit like short path distillation benefit from using a diaphragm pump versus a rotary vane? Even removing a solvent, I think a diaphragm pump would be superior versus a rotary vane.

Wanted to hear your opinion. I have always used Gast diaphragm pumps for removing solvents and rotary vanes for high temp distillations.

And I think you and I are on the same boat when it comes high end laboratory equipment /sciencegasmmmmmm
 
I've got a RobinAir 15500 5cfm 2 stage, a 7 cfm rotary single stage, and a 3cfm dual stage from best value vacs. The RobinAir runs best overall for multi-day applications, i've blown the oil seal gaskets on the 7cfm and the 3 cfm (both of BVV), i assume due to heat, even though i had a strong fan blowing on them the entire time. Gaskets are easy to seal, fixed the single stage in about 10 mins (once its cooled off and you've cleaned it). I will say the 3cfm is the cheapest, but has a better pull then the RobinAir, reaches max fast a bit quicker, and its tiny, like 1/3 the weight.

Our Welch 2052's won't pull below 1.5 torr/1500 microns or -29.86 in Hg, where the single stage AC pumps typically pull below 100 micron, which is .1 torr/-29.91 in Hg, and a two stage to 25 microns.

We don't like to pull any lower than -29.8" Hg anyway, because it boils away the monoterpenes at room temperature, and by using a chemical duty diaphragm pump, we didn't contaminate the pump discharge with oil, so we can easily cold trap and recover the volatiles that are removed.
