Hey Fellas. So during the late stage of flowering, right before harvest, I noticed a bit of bud rot on one of the main buds. Ive removed the whole cola and immediately harvested the rest, inspecting the stems of each bud to make sure theyre clean. While there was no mold on the buds, there are surely spores. I didnt even know washing was a thing until I had aleady dried them. Id like to try washing the dried buds. I know its usually done right after harvest. But is it not possible to wash and then dry again? I dont care about reduced potency. I just want to be sure its clean. Thanks in advance for your responses. Cheers

I would not wash them personally, use them for distillate or butter asap, it will spread I've been there, in a day or 2 it will be on other buds. Bud rot is the worst thing you can get in my experience. That's just my opinion though ✌️

The butter is probably a better idea than washing. But why not? If I disinfect the drying tent and set a bunch of fans on high. Shouldnt that make it clean enough for smoking? I wouldnt gift or sell it either way anyways.

ok.. if your keeping it yourself,..
you could put into an oven set at 90-100 degrees for 15-20 mins that should stop and kill the mold,.

In the end, you are risking a severe repository infection by smoking the bud. I would go the butter route. I threw 2 whole plants into a couple sticks of butter when it happened. That butter was insane 😆, it's the way to go IMO. I would not risk it personally.

If it was powdery mildew or botrytis it could be removed with a bath of hydrogen peroxide and water... you can also kill bud rot with hydrogen peroxide and water but the affected parts are still gonna taste like sh1t. You can also use the oven as suggested by Gnick but I personally prefeer washing them. I wash them wether they have something or not, cleaner smoke, but specially if they got something. In the oven youre killing it but youre not removing the spores, just making them sterile, youre still gonna smoke them.
EDIT: Sorry left something important. Yes you can wash them when theyre dry but make sure to dry them with a fan asap. And no, washing doesnt reduce potency. I was gifted weed grown by my uncle, already cured, but it had powdery mildew so I washed it and smoked it. Of course it wasnt great anyway but it would have been much worse had I not washed them. If youre desperate enough, as long as you kill and ideally remove the mold and the spores, you can smoke it xD.

It was definitely Botrytis. No powdery mildew. I might give it a wash as you said, disinfect the drying tent, use most of it for butter,I think. Then, just to be safe, Ill put the rest in the oven at 100 degrees for 20 minutes before smoking any.

Thanks all of you for your responses. They were very helpful.

A friend of mine got botrytis last grow cause he didnt monitor the temperature and humidity in the tent and he was slow steaming them basically hahaha. I told him to do the hydrogen peroxide bath because I knew it would work and it removed everything, some of his buds were covered in fluffy botrytis and it dissapeared. He smoked it, he removed the brown parts, he didnt complain about the taste. Now, he did it when it was freshly cut, when its dried and the buds compact you might not be that lucky and some might still be inside the bud. The peroxide is gonna kill it anyway, or the oven, whichever you prefeer. If you wanna do the bath prepare one bucket with a ratio of 1:10 3% peroxide to water and another bucket with just water, clean them gently in the first one, clean them again in the second one. Dont use chlorinated water as it breaks down the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. Also tap water has things you dont wanna be smoking anyway besides chlorine. You could use tap water if you let the chlorine evaporate for 1 day or 2 but yeah... I would used osmotized water aka cheap commercial water.

or research water curing
Ill definitely look into it for sure. But I need to do something tonight to deal with this issue. Also, attatched a pic of the harvest km dealing with lol. Thats going to be some strong ass butter lol

I know you don't want to hear this and I already have a pretty good idea what you're going to do, but I wouldn't use any of that I wouldn't even make a butter with it

You do you but I'm dealing with life-threatening issues right now because of the work I did decades ago, and it's not worth it.

Of course, its always advisable not to consume anything that has been affected by pests, but if you remove the fungus or at least most of it and kill the rest and the spores, what life threatening things can happen that cannot happen by just smoking anything in general? Im curious. I know that if you dont sterilize the spores you can get pneumonia but thats the only life threatening situation that I know can happen as is not very likely. If you dont wanna share whats going on with you its fine, I just wanted to try because I dont know much about it and you clearly do. I have only smoked treated affected weed when I had nothing else to smoke, which has been like 2 or 3 times in my life. One time I was smoking trimmings, boy that thing will send you to the grave fast hahaha and thats what they put in pre rolls. Even if the pre rolled spliffs feel nicer its just because the tobbaco is making it more bearable but its super bad for the lungs. Anyway I was smoking trimmings for a month and I ended up with asthma attacks every other day for a while.

I have respiratory issues from damage I incurred running a business decades ago where we use certain chemicals & compounds that's just manifested in the last five or so years

The reason I started growing again after an 18-year hiatus was when cannabis became legal in Massachusetts a budtender we knew told us about how moldy a lot of their bud was

But like I said people going to do what they're going to do ... but that's not my business ☕🐸

Im sorry to hear that, I dont know which chemicals were involved but I know of some of them that are used for various things that are very very very bad for you indeed. I have asthma so I can detect weed that I cant smoke because it has something inmediatly. Bad flushes with synthetics, mold, yellow leaves inside the bud (not necessarily caused by mold, could be that it was very hungry at the end and it had nowhere else to take it from, still those make me cough), etc... until I started to grow. I had pests like everyone else but never to the point that it wasnt smokable with a bit of treatment and cleaning, at most discarding a few buds. My asthma started after a few years of starting to smoke tobbaco, got worse when I started to smoke joints every day (specially since I started with hash) but its still very mild compared to other people with asthma. Except for the before mentioned time when I was smoking trimms, it got really bad for a while.

Most mature of three plants…..Washed in 3 part bath, 1st with lemon juice and baking soda in room temp water, 2nd was a warm water rinse followed by a cold water rinse. Then shook the water out and let em dry under the sun and breeze. Lots of dirt, bugs and debris in water, should make my asthma less affected, I hope.I want to try to regrow buds this winter in the plant as I nipped the buds off ,heat the branches. Anybody agree with this approach and will the plant regrow buds this winter and how should I feed it?
