A CANNABIS user has narrowly avoided jail after he was caught growing his own supply in his bedroom.

Elliot Levi Potter was already on parole for another drug-related offence when police searched his Redbank Plains home and found 16 "pot" plants.

At Ipswich District Court, the 28-year-old pleaded guilty to producing more than 500gms of a dangerous drug.

Crown prosecutor Shelly Francis said Potter had fitted an air duct and lights in his room to help cultivate his illegal indoor garden.

During the search on June 27, small amounts of cannabis - believed to be from the plants - were also found in the kitchen and laundry.

Ms Francis said Potter's criminal history for drug offences dated back to 2007. She said Potter had been sentenced to three years in jail and released on parole in August 2013, after he was caught supplying methamphetamine.

Since Potter was found with the cannabis plants while on parole, Ms Francis said charges were a lot more serious.

Defence barrister April Freeman said Potter had been in custody since his arrest. Ms Freeman said Potter's marijuana grow room had not been a very "sophisticated" set-up and that the cannabis had strictly been for his personal use.

She said Potter started using drugs when he was a school student and formed an addiction over time which led to his offending.

Ms Freeman said her client came from a supportive family and had attended rehab for a month to battle his addiction.

Judge Deborah Richards said Potter needed to try harder to address his drug problem.

"If you can conquer your drug problem, I am sure you will go on to become a productive member of the community," she said. "That is not going to happen though until you deal with your drug issues."

Potter was convicted and sentenced to a year in jail, which was added to the sentence he was already serving and released on parole.
