What to cut, what to save?

My first time growing and my grow is definitely growing. I I recently topped this Autoflower but I can’t find any information about what to do for these little splitter shoots coming up. Should I cut the big fan leaves that stick way out and let the splitters grow up?

Also, this plant is tall. Well over 2 feet at this point. Can I top this plant about half way and put the top half in a new pot and expect it to grow? If I do this, will the bottom still flower?

If you notice the plant next to it is flowering, I did not top it in time and she auto flowered way early. I’m not going to get much yield from her, unfortunately. Leading me to try and get the most bang for my buck here with the other 3 plants.

auto are on a schedule for flowering, they usually start to flower within 4-6 weeks past germination, if they do not then they could be photoperiod, that could happen.

(you usually avoid topping auto and actually no need to remove any leaf or secondary branches, leaves stages are spaced enough for good light penetration outdoor)

Doesn’t topping allow for more bud sights to develope?

topping could usually stunt the plant a little for a week or two, you usually don't want that with auto.

but seeing their size, and not already showing preflowers they could be photoperiods and not automatic, as said that's not unusual to get photo instead of auto (how old since soaking the seeds ?)

i have grown some auto 3 times they always started trhowing preflowers during the 4th week past germination, i have heard some auto could take a little longer, but if they don't start flowering in the next two week there is high chance they are photoperiods and not automatics.

ive grown an auto white widow this year and as an experiment i chopped off all the fan leaves . its definatly got bigger buds than i normally get , twice as big ...although i cant really compare with my other plants as they are runtz layer cake .

So you cut the fan leafs and leave the splitters between them and the main stem?

in general don't pull a leaf when it's still moslty green and healthy it bring energy to the plant for growth or until it really shade significantly a vigorous lower bud site or branche. (also keep in mind light penetration and dispersion is much better outdoor with the sun than indoor with artificial light)

for topping there's no specific rules that really depend on what you gonna try to achieve with your plant in term of shape in the end.

I've grown a few autos and most started flowering around 4th or 5th week. I've never topped autos. It's too easy to stunt them and you lose flowering time.

This grow I did cut off a few branches into flowering. It didn't seem to bother them.

OMG these autos went to school on my ass. My 2 photos were culled from 4 plants as the expressions were very different. Doing that gave me a nice template with those 2 that worked for both plants.
These autos all use light different. My failure to recognize this has one plant so stretched it is the same hight as the 2nd plant but 3 less nodes due to stretch spacing. If I had recognized that and got more light on that plant it would have grown much closer and for now I am down 4 stem runs and any stem runs THOSE start up.
Definitely learning more every day on the Farm.

That is definitely true, the autos seem very temperamental to light change. It’s been raining here for weeks and they don’t seem to mind that at all but some minor changes in sun and they shoot up 2” a day. Outdoor growing is definitely a challenge

Thank you, the outdoor grow is challenging. Sometimes over whelming with how fast they can make a big a change. A few days can go by and it’ll look like a completely different plant. Trying to stay on top of it before they get out of control seems to be the name of the game haha I thank you for you time

Why HST on an auto? LST would yield more since it doesn't stunt, at least not the same as a top.

I got some autos, no topping just slight bending so all lower nodes get light. Only snip fan leaves if they touch soil or shades other bud sites and leaves, and even then you can keep it with proper training instead of removing it.
I don't pick out any sidebranches on autos because in those 4 weeks of veg you want as much plant as possible. Snipping anything will delay that growth.

Generally when defoliating, you should always be able to tell a newbie next to you why you just did that. If you can't, dont snip.

Yep! Heard the same thing as well and my boy who came through this weekend told me my auto was more than likely a photo. I do have to admit I did lose a week do to her becoming sick due to gnats. So he told me the same, "wait about two more weeks".
