The roots need air, and different media are better or worse at providing that. IMHO, over-watering is the number one challenge for new soil growers, followed closely by over-lighting and over-feeding. But there are lots of ways to grow, and everyone has to find their own balance. From the OP's description I thought it might help to think about watering technique. But I'm just some idiot on the internet...all the standard disclaimers apply.
