if you're doing bulk or doing it for fun its def worth it. I can spend 50 bucks on malt extract, agar and a sack of wheat berries and I'm good to run 8-10 tubs roughly 5-7lb dry

Hey @doober I’m hoping you can give me a hand.

I can’t seem to get my mushrooms to fruit. Not sure what’s going wrong.

I made two, half pint pftek cakes, as shown in The Psilocybin Mushroom Bible. Rice flour and vermiculture mix, with a touch of gypsum, steralized, and innoculated with about 3 ml of mushroom spore. They colonized the jar well, I waited about a week after full colonization before popping them out, submerging them in water for 24 hours, and rolling in sterilized vermiculture. I placed them in a tropical terrarium I grow plants in, as I figured the 75 degree temperature and 80 percent humidity would be good for them. They never fruited, and about three weeks later developed mold.

So I built a small fruiting chamber. The fan runs on a timer to get fresh air, it’s sitting on a heat pad and has a humidifier, so it stays about 77 degrees and 90 percent humidity. I tossed two new fully colonized cakes in there, and they didn’t fruit. Three weeks later they developed mold. So I tossed them. I bumped the humidity down to 80%, and tried again, this time with one that was dunked and rolled, and another one that was just pulled out of the jar and put in the chamber. They didn’t fruit either.

I tossed a bag of Reishi in there, and they bloomed fine. But when I put a bag of pink oyster and king oyster, they don’t appear to be doing too well. And now the pftek cakes are developing mold too (been about a month or so).

Any ideas what I’m doing wrong?

there's a lot going on in there, if your trying to fruit actives/psilocybe's I would do them on their own and I would do it in a dedicated shot gun fruiting chamber, if I had to guess I would say a combination of your heating mat and fan pulling in air is breeding bacteria, the heating mats will def introduce contams through stagnation and heat, with all the moisture and dirty air I would say something is getting in there and causing a problem, does it ever smell stinky in your fruiting tub? if it smells like anything but fresh earthy mushroom you can bet on bacteria. 77 degrees is a little warm, they may colonize a little faster but its warm for fruiting conditions.

the more you add things like fans and humidifiers you'll realize they're just new vectors for contams. if your doing pf-tek let your jars hit full colonization, and place them in a shot gun fruiting chamber, its essentially a tote with a bunch of small holes in it, with wet perlite in the bottom and just cover the holes with micropore tape, they're really basic and nothing beats them imo, except for spawning to bulk in a mono tub.

another thing to remember is fruiting is initiated by water evaporating, if you have a humidifier in there keeping it high the mycelium wont pin and fruit out for you. and if it fruits before full colonization its the mycelium trying to out run contams and drop spores to ensure survival.

you should built a shot gun fruiting chamber, don't fan or mist it until after the first harvest and then when you rehydrate inject water into your cakes instead of misting to minimize aborts.

No, it just smells like earthy mushrooms.

So, I had the tub, and I was going to start making a monotub. But then I figured, it would be easier to hook up a humidifier (that I already had) and a fan (that I also already had) than it would be to drill a ton of holes in the tub, waft new air in every now and then, and spray with a hand mister.

But maybe not, lol.

Alright, I think between the temperature, and the 80-90% humidity, that’s what my issue is.

I’ll ditch the heater, and the humidifier, and drill some holes in the sides of the tub to convert it into a monotub.

Thanks bro!

When I tried Pftek, I had perlite on the very bottom. A tiny led at the top. I would spray the perlite now and then to keep condensation.

I then had that tub in another tub with an aquarium heater and water for the heat. Not too hot though. For my 2nd attempt, they actually fruited.

Soak the cake, roll it in vermiculite and stick in the fruiting chamber. I read for subsequent flushes let soak in the fridge.

you want to make a shotgun fruiting chamber for pf-tek, a mono tub is for bulk spawn with shredded cakes or preferably grain

Cool thread. Glad I seen it.

Hoping somebody can help me on this.

I had done some reading on the net of the medicinal benefits of psilocybin. Some reading indicated micro dosing can/may be beneficial to cognitive and some neurological functions.

A while ago, an oz of Dino Eggs fell out of the sky right in front of me. I collected them all, and then dried them. I then used a mortar and pestle to grind them into powder. To test potency, I added a gram of the powder to a cup of hot sugar water and drank it. And yup, it fucked me up. So good. The the Gods were kind.

So I took 23g of the powdered Dino Eggs and soaked it in 750ml of 195 Proof Everclear for a week.
- Then strained and squeezed the solution from the biomass.
- Then filtered the solution down to 0.45um with Buchner/membrane.
- Then reduced the solution in a rotovap (40C/30TORR) down to approx 300ml.

For a week straight, I added 2ml to my morning coffee every day. It did make the coffee taste a bit off, but not terrible. I am not sure if I stopped the therapy to soon, or its basically a 'placebo'. I also wasnt sure if any kind of effect. So the following weekend for a test, I added approx 10ml to my coffee. No effect.

From what I understand with mushrooms, if extracting for medicinal purposes so mdma for sale, it is a 2 phase extraction process. One with water, and one with alcohol. Then they are combined. But I am only interested in the psilocybin.

So my questions are this:
- Is it even possible to extract psilocybin with Everclear?
- Should have I continued the therapy longer?
- Higher dosage?
- Is my extraction in fact a 'placebo'?

I really wish to pursue this for my own well being. I'm old, used, abused, and worn out. I have nothing to lose. But everything to gain if it is beneficial.

That’s a seriously impressive journey, especially shifting into gourmet and functional mushrooms. I’ve been interested in getting started myself but haven’t taken the plunge yet. It’s awesome that you’re open to helping others. What would you suggest as the easiest mushrooms for a beginner to start with? And are there any common mistakes you see new growers make? I would definitely love to learn from your experience and connect more!
