The biggest challenge I find with breeding is finding the Unique IBL's or Landraces, the ones that are available have been used so many times in so many hybrids it is difficult to find anything truly unique anymore. Unless you open pollinate, collect seeds and start a few thousand and go hunting, that's impractical for the majority. I am planning a few trips to the hotspots over the next couple of years.

sometimes there are some local alternatives, even in the middle of town nowhere I've been able to find old heads with afghan or original NL beans lurking around.

Afghan is easy to find. I agree with you on that. Difficulty I have with local Af's that have been around for a long time, and the genetic drift that occurs from environmental factors. Eventually Afghan becomes something else when removed from it's native Eastern roots. Mind you not much different but enough to know the subtle nuances like the scent of the essential oil profile and yield, Root structure will differ from that of the original from the East. I recently returned from a trip that yielded nothing more than the same old gene pool that was there 10 years ago, and anything new was an addition from the hybrid's of today. Bets you could hope for locally is just working the same line over years while adding the best of every Af you come across.

I agree as well, the afghan i've sampled in the past few years or more has all been very different. seems like location is a major factor in how strains develop and finish, goes along with alot of stories about og kush and the variances between the gajillion different names.

dont mistake a plant with longer internode length as a sativa. NOTHING in that particular pheno is sativa to me. So much of that is bs. S1 of hybrids and polyhybrids are going to show a bit more phenotypic variation, it is in their genetic make up. Should not see more than 2-4 really though. Hope you enjoy the flowers
