OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -
Tonight, supporters of an effort to make marijuana legal in Mississippi will meet in Ocean Springs. They'll have petitions with them. And they'll be encouraging people to sign those petitions to get an initiative on 2016 ballots that ends a prohibition on cannabis.

The supporters of Initiative 48 will be at the Government Street Grocery. They need 21,000 signatures per district to get their efforts in front of Mississippi voters.

Initiative 48 amends the Mississippi Constitution to "fully legalize the use, taxation (if applicable), medical use, cultivation and sale of both industrial hemp, and cannabis (as defined by the Federal Government), only for adults who are 21 years or older."

The initiative also requires the legislature to "add a process for expunging the criminal record of any person convicted of non-violent cannabis possession, sales and manufacture against the State of Mississippi."

A website encouraging people to say yes on 48 emphasizes only registered voters in Jackson County can sign the petition being circulated tonight at the Government Street Grocery. Petitions can be signed from 6:30 p.m until 9:00 p.m.
