Ordered 2 2.5 Gallon Worm casting Tea Bags and a Air pump and Air Stone so i can make up some Tea from the 70 Gallons of castings i currently have! Well 35 gallons cause the other 35 gallons worth is going to go into a raised bed outside for the veggies and such then the rest of the castings i'll turn into tea to feed the veggies.

If i can figure out a container i'll be happy to pass some out to friends as long as they cover shipping costs. :D

I've considered them..over buying castings. Hard to come up with a winter spot for them indoors sometimes. Do you know the lowest temp they can handle?
Nothing looks better than the liquid that settles in the bottom collector. That's the stuff i wanna make a tea with.

Can prolly survive down to just above freezing :D I keep mine in the basement for winter so they stay around 65 but they can handle down to around 40 before they start to hibernate.

Heres a cpl shots of my bin, condensed 3 bins into 1 making life easier on my self when it comes time to harvest the castings..

The white powder you see on top is purina worm chow and a very very light powdered sugar style dusting of dolomite, getting in the habit of dusting the bin once a week or so to keep the shit happy and bugs to a min.

added in some crab shells this morning in the upper left spot where you see the dark wet area, heard it takes about a week for them to soften up and start to breakdown but so far no smell and they been in there for a good 8+ hours now.

Use my red flashlight to peek in and watch them eat alot, such tiny little mouths pulling on bits of bark and bedding or bites of food its really fun to just watch uhm.. Weird hobby eh?

Really? Ive been giving mine k-cups fucking Galore mixed in with processed food and they chow down on everything, Ive really yet to find anything they won't eat lol

I estimate the population around 3000 but it could be alot more since they do breed and theres a ton of cocoons..

I put my st. bernards hair in the bin after cutting his hair. Spent brewing grains are a nice addition too, just need to break em up and mix em in.

Anyone ever grow cover crops on their worm bin?

Expanding to an 2nd raised bed, this one will be wood framed, screened bottom. It's 4'x8'. Retiring it from vegging growing, not in the best spot for growing, but will be nice for the worms.

Im going to be testing that out this spring, Just gonna dump 70 gallons of castings on to the sandy soil of michigan and plant some shit right in it fuck it :D

Also ordered some venus fly trap seeds since the bins always got some flying creature around i figure why not give a plant something to eat, so im gonna try and grow those in a pot of castings not sure what im going to do for light yet but, i'll figure that out later :D

Ive never put shredded paper in my bin, With the peat moss and Coir bedding i don't find much of a need for the mess of paper..
I only use paper to distinguish the castings from the bedding.
i also feed my worms my old roots zones, they love it. i think its because it begins to smell like potatos and they love potatos.

so, what's the whole story concerning housing live worms? Seems like it would be a huge vector for fungus gnats! Is there a way around that?

Burry the food, usually does the trick, Lime the bin also helps... Infact after i Limed my bin i havn't seen a single bug crawling around, even limed the horse shit bin i keep for food and that took care of the bugs around there too!

As long as the acidic conditions are kept in check the whole bug issue really isn't much of an issue.. what few bugs you may get tend to stay IN the bin, if they venture far its to one of a cpl sticky traps i have hanging around just in case.

But yeah they can and do attract all kinda pests... Outside bins will attract wildlife , skunks, coons, possums, ect they will just ravish my outside bins so indoors it is for me :(
