Has anybody else tried this soil mix from Rare Earth? 380$ a yard, but this is bar far the best soil I have ever seen. The tilth is perfect, and the soil test results are second to none. I am personally testing this mix myself, and sending them to Logan Labs. Once the tests come back to me, I will post them up for others to look at. Personally, I am stoked that a soil yard got their stuff together and is testing soil mixes. Instead of just throwing a little of this, some compost here, and bam 60$ a yard of crap!

This mix has hand sprinkled additives and a slow mixing of the ingredients. They only mix 10 yard batches to ensure the quality, and they take 30+ minutes turning the pile slow and easy. Then they keep the mix wet, so the bio life is very active.(at one point they talked of applying compost tea to keep alive, not sure if that is still happening)

I got a fresh batch made that day, but they claim usually it is ready to plant in because they keep it moist and let it "cook". I am letting the rain soak it all for the next couple days, then into their final post and a cover crop goes on next.

Anybody use Coots mix from Rare Earth?

Sorry Bulldog never used it. I think I remember Seamaiden talking about using it, maybe she will chime in. I am interested in hearing more about it. Let us know how it does for you.

I think this soil mix has only been available for the last month or so, and I don't believe @Seamaiden has bought more soil since. If she has used this soil, I would really like to now what she thinks of the soil. Thanks for the heads up slap14.

@mike hunt Buildasoil also carries the soil mix itself. Buildasoil uses the same ingredients except the compost. They both use the same EWC, but Buildasoil uses a fish compost as rare earth uses Bu's Blend. Both incrediably high quality compost.

@Seamaiden Did you ever get soil tests on that soil? I did see a report on coots mix, but I am doing my own tests as well. I will post it up when I get them.

You say you mixed up your batch? Does that mean you sourced all the individual ingredients and mixed yourself? Or did you buy it pre-mixed?

I was going to make it myself but I couldn't find the same quality compost as these guys are using.

@Tnelz You have any input on the soil mix? Would love to hear how it worked for you.:)

i remember clackmas posting up his recipe on one of the forums a while ago, forget which one though, he was always a good grower putting out good results.....but at 380$ a yard LOL all it would do for me is increase the cost per gram to grow it lol. which as any farmer should do(cannabis or not) is try and keep costs to a minimum, just because you spend more doesnt mean that you will get that much more % ROI when its all said and done...if it makes you feel better to pay more, thats fine, i know some ppl who if you offer 2 bags of weed, one at 200 and the other at 250, they will pick the more expensive one because they think they are getting something better, even if its the same thing in both bags....though most ppl i know are cheap bastards and will always choose cheaper lol

edit: a prime example is the buffalo compost....at the price they are charging, i would never use it, at that point id rather use cow manure compost lol, biggest difference between the 2 is the price :D

if you are looking at mixing your own mix, then i have a wonderful list i have comprised if you have not seen it yet....and ppl are always adding their own mix to the list all the time as well....i would have to say its hands down the biggest list of different soil mixes in one spot on the web(i have not seen any bigger) https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=228020

On Buildasoil they sell a Clackamascoots kit, it comes with nutes and amendments, and you add it to your base. Its 30$ to do 2cubic feet. So yes I mixed it myself.

its not hard to find quality compost locally regardless of where you life unless your in a 3rd world country....though if you intend on having it shipped to you then im sure someone like seamaiden can point you to the right direction of where to get good quality compost at cheap prices, because quality compost starts with quality materials, a high price usually means either a high cost of raw materials/labor/processing... but at 300$+ a yard, lol its a lot of profit there i tell ya that

Just to let you know @Joe Fresh I have a total of 31 yards just for my cannabis at the moment. 13.5 yards being a custom mix costing about 160$ a yard that Rare Earth blended for me last year. 13.5 yards is native soil mixed with EWC and lava rock @ about 24$ a yard. Then the remaining 4 yards are the coots mix. As for keeping cost at a minimum, I will be recycling this soil until I die or move. If it lasts 5 seasons, the coots mix only costs 76$ a yard per year. 20 years it's only 19$ a yard per year.

If you don't think different soils make a difference then you might be mistaken. When you are trying to grow cup quality herb, you must have everything dialed in order to achieve the essential fats and amino acids that bring the finished product to the highest level. You can't do that with 50$ a yard soil, unless somebody is seriously underselling their product. Been growing for 15+ years and the soil makes the #1 difference in my finished product. Not foliars, not fertigation, not pruning techniques, but the soil. Grow from down low, ya know?

The most important input of soil IMO is the compost. I don't know about buffalo compost, but EWC is usually 5 times the cost of steer compost. Do a side by side, EWC blows steer out of the water big time. It's not even close.

With all that said, I do often fall victim to the 250$ bag of herb. (not that I actually pay for herb, but I agree with the analogy)

the buffalo stuff is more expensive than ewc lol.....but yes i totally understand about diversity of soil, thats why if you looked at my link then you would see the huge diversity of the different mixes....all i am saying is 380 a yard is kind of nuts, when you can source the same materials for much cheaper and mix it your self

and yes i have fallen for the sales pitch, or the "new next best thing out" before as well, i just try to steer ppl away from it, i also have 15+ yrs under my belt, and i always mix my own soils, because i cant afford to pay 380 a yard or some shit....plus i live in canada, so prices to ship anything here is nuts...

Thanks @Power OG
I did the math, and it was cheaper. However I couldn't source quality ewc or peat in volume. The peat would come from lowes with a crappy brand @ 15$ for 3 cubic feet. I couldn't find peat anywhere for cheaper within 100 miles from me.

BTW - 2 cubic feet @ 30$ is 405$ a yard....... Did I read and calculate that right?

ok maybe i dont knjow like i said i didnt calculate it..but thats expensive if you ask me...but i guess everyone has their price they are willing to pay/charge....like the saying goes, its only worth as much as ppl are willing to pay for it

Too true @Joe Fresh

When I said I did the math, I did the math item for item off BaSoil website. If I could have sourced the peat and ewc for normal bulk prices, in my calculations showed it would have been cheaper.

When I asked if I did the math right I was talking to @Power OG. He either misspoke on the price per cubic feet, or I miscalculated somehow. If the math and his statement are correct, he paid more to mix it himself. I must be missing something.
