Greetings All,

I've started this thread to talk about Outdoor Growing in Ontario, Canada. To start things off with,

What strains are working for people in our growing zone here in Ontario? What strains will finish off suitably, outside, from Mid Sept to early Oct? What strains are the largest producers for a commercial crop?

Some strains we've tried but are less than enthusiastic about:

Purple Kush, Deadhead Kush, Blackwater Kush, Boss Hogg Kush, Kandy Kush, and a few other Kush, Skunk, Skunk #1, Northern lights, Blueberry, White Rhino,Emerald Wonder, Kish.

This year, we tried BC Pinewarp, Nigerian Nightmare and Boss Hog Kush. None finished off proper.

We still haven't found the AH..., Oh..., YA Baby...factor. There has to be a couple real gems out there for Ontario, feel free to pipe in. We are looking for Ontario's Finest, Outdoor Commercial Crop!

Cheers from Ontario!

had the same problem here in Michigan. never get to finish because of the late season mold and rot, and cold weather. until this year. Tried a mold resistant strain. planted 5 Holland's Hopes.
Still have one late one going ,but other 4 finished a few days ago. ZERO mold or bud rot. I'm amazed .I will never grow anything else outdoors. The others go in the greenhouse. Got a huge Deep cheese in there. Lucky, the limbs hanging out of the windows have been getting some rot after rains. but the hopes just shake it off and smile. They are great. try them once ,you will too.

I live in the Pacific North West and have been growing in my backyard for the last six years. I've had to worry about a short growing season (for a few reason other than weather) too.

I've found that auto-flower seeds work best for me. The yield isn't awesome but I'm just growing for personal use. And I can get a years worth of weed from about 6 plants.

This year I went from seed to harvest in 11 weeks on one strain and 15 on the other.

I've grown non auto-flower strains a couple of times and have had the mold and rot take much of my grow before I could harvest. But I got way more off these plants so it kinda worked out...

Thankfully, is legal here now and hopefully it'll be easier to get plants that are more suited to my climate next season. I see that you all just got a PM that seems to be weed-friendly... Maybe next year you'll have more options!

Cheers

I have grown many outdoor crops in Ontario and Kush strains never do good in our climate. My best yields were with Afghan, Nuken and also Skunk. Most of my best yields were with strains that had to be harvested in early October. Some of my Nuken crops were pulled in late September and the buds were the size of my forearm.
Look for strains that were designed for the colder climates. Freezeland will for sure work well. Many of my friends grow nothing but freezeland in the cornfields of Ontario. These plants are resistant to early frost. So letting them grow untill middle October will yield massive buds.

I've had Freezeland recommended a few times now. I have heard of it for years now but I have never seen it, we stayed away because it seemed like older type genetics, a little generic if you will, not quite what the kids want these days. What is the trich count like, is it very resinous and glowing with crystals or not? Is it any good for oils and concentrates?

I'll tell ya why I prefer to grow average quality, high yielding strains in the cornfields.
As far as I'm concerned, when I grow outdoors in the cornfields of Ontario, I am not growing AAA kush type buds that all the kids like nowadays. Those strains are not known for heavy yields. I grow outdoors because I can achieve massive yields and not pay any hydro bills, or risk getting my door kicked in.
I love to grow outdoors in Ontario because if you prepare for your crop starting in the winter,(get your mothers growing ), come spring time you can drop a couple thousand clones in the fields. If everything goes as planned, you can pull in a hundred pounds of outdoors or more if lucky. And the reason I could care less about the AAA quality, is because I put a price tag of a thousand bucks a pound on my outdoors. If everything went as planned, I can pull in a hundred thousand bucks. There are lots of people who love to buy a pound of average quality bud for a grand.
After all the bud is gone, there is a shitload of leaf leftover, and I always turn my leftovers into primo honey oil. I get quite a bit of honey whenever I haul in my outdoors.
I'm not sure of the trich count or any of those things. I only put that much care and effort into my indoor grows. When I grow indoor its always for the AAA buds that command a top dollar.

mrsmarybrown, if you can even find this strain anymore, give it a shot, NUKEN. I have had amazing results with it outside. Huge buds. White with crystal. The smell is very pungent. It could almost pass as a good indoor bud when fully cured and ready to sell.

Thanks for the input Joe. I could have wrote your response myself. We have very similar thoughts and experiences. Those are my exact thoughts as well. We strictly grow in corn, planting mid june after the spraying is done. We run 800-1000/per lb, outdoor prices went down this year here in our part of Ontario.

I found some Nuken, it is apparently a cross between Kish and God Bud. We tried Kish before and didn't care for it, but if you have already tried Nuken in Ontario corn fields, we just might give it a shot.

We are always interested in large Trich/crystal coverage for concentrates, as we also sell, NorPene Vac Ovens, as well as MFG and sell CLS BHO Extractors here in Canada.

Yes you're right about the growing similarities. And the funny thing is, I also tried Kish outside, the year prior to the first Nuken crop, and we also had shitty yields. It must have something to do with the God Bud genetics. The Kish has a wonderful amount of crystalization, if you can manage to pull of a decent crop. And the God Bud, which I also have grown outside, has always produced for me a large yield. So add the two traits from the gene pool and you end up with Nuken. The best of both worlds you could say.
One thing I feel like I should pass on to you, (because I always like to help out a local cornfield grower), is that I have had real good success with growing near small airports. I'm sure you have heard of people doing this, or maybe you have already. I was told by a friend that, because of air traffic restrictions, the police choppers can't patrol near the airports. So if you have any strains that grow late into the season, which is when the choppers are in the air, you can feel safe in knowing they wont be found from the air.

I found that Sweet Deep Grapefruit from Dynafem worked very well. Most resistant, finishes end of September-start of October with generous yields. Also Purple Kush and a few other purps far out very well.

Sweet Deep Grapefruit and Critical strains from Dynafem work real well when started from seep. Great yields, very potent entry, outstanding taste for outdoor. Also Chem Dawgs, Northern Lights, White Widow, White Rhino and freezeland also do very well. If you can find seeds then try out Friesien Dew or Friesen Dew not sure of the spelling but they have dank buds and have reportedly produce upto 3 pounds dry weight per plant. Tried them once in Ontario and the plants were massive, like 12'-18' and the same width, didn't see quite those numbers but still pulled a lb a plant dried.

I am looking to grow 1-4 plants in my urban backyard in the GTA... can anyone please recommend a low odour, short growing strain that will produce dense juicy buds? Does anyone know of any dwarf 20% thc strain? Also I need to buy feminized seeds to do the job. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

kushy kush was short. A lot of autos are short (afghan kush ryder is strong, low odor and short). My kushy kush finished mid October I think and produced 3 oz total height 2 feet.

Hi, nice thread. its a bit of a challenge to trust answers without knowing the process by which these strains were grown. still, its a good start to to get a sense of which strains people have had success with. In reading these responses I can understand why the license consultants out there I have spoken to believe that outdoor production can not meet the quality of indoor production. As an experienced outdoor grower I can say that is bullshit. While the strain has an impact on the yield and outcome of the outdoor grow, its also the techique that that determines the result. Hashplant, shiskaberry, catpiss, white widow, triple cheese, cbd remedy. all succesfull outdoor grows. but most of those are old strains, one can only hope them old seeds will bust

Dr. Greenthumb's Iranian crosses are a good bet, i really like the Iranian Diesel. I've heard Carnage and Goldmine will also do well, so i'm going to try the Carnage this year as well.
