So my plants got spider mites. My boyfriend sprayed, "drenched" them with sty-let oil mixed with water and alcohol. Killed the mites but also really fu***** up the plants. We dont know what to do. still has some healthy leaves but most are dead. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

You need to post pictures--

Get out the trash bag, those are done.

Did you spray with the lights on? Sty-let oil is photosensitive.

It can be sprayed with lights on, even in full sun, but if it's not kept very well mixed, it'll burn the living shit out of the plants. Like as has happened here. It's trash. Cut off the affected parts and get what's living going again.

Next time, don't mix with isopropyl, either. I suppose they can be used alternately, but they'd be fighting each other since JMS is a physical barrier and essentially smothers the mites.

Post Stylet oil spray.

This area was sprayed late in a 500 ml batch and seamaiden thinks that I experienced separation and sprayed out oil at too high a concentration. If I understand correctly.

I sprayed heavily, so I'm glad this (hopefully) looks to be as bad as it's going to get.
Could have been much worse.

Hope my mites hate it.

I've done MUCH worse than that. It can get so ugly, so sad.

@Seamaiden
It is not potentially NOT ok to spray with lights on or in full sun if the temperature is too high.
I prefer to stay below 80F, Manufacturer of stylet oil states 90F.
Telling people to do that is not solid advice. Better safe than sorry.

You state that you have done worse that that???
Why not share what you could have done differently?

Think about the other persons perspective and whether or not someone they WILL READ DIRECTIONS.

Here is what is not on the directions:
If you do not burn em right away, can also do it with oil buildup. Then you will get burning like @Dunge shows.

Oils can leave residues on the leaves and that causes that burning. Look very closely at the leaves and see if you notice a small portion of the leaf has some oil buildup.

May not happen for you at first, but once the lights get tuned up than you get the burn. Lots of different types of oils can do that.

Here is what I recommend to be safe:
1. make sure plants are watered
2. test a plant one plant or just a branch first!
3. spray when temps are below 80f
4. do not spray in direct sunlight or when lights are on
5. Try to allow 6 hours to dry
6. make sure oils are mixed well. agitate bottle while foliar spraying.
7. check leaves to make sure there is not any oil build up.

Hope that helps to save someone plants!

I have written very often about what I've done wrong and why it was wrong. Do I really have to repost *all* that same stuff every time I make a comment on JMS? Or will there come a point in time when I can just expect people to read the label that comes attached to every jug?

The first sentence is confusing.

What could be done differently? Mix, mix, mix and MIX. And then make sure to keep it mixed throughout application. Period.

Reading and follow the directions!
Good point. Would be a pain to share every time. Especially with the quantity of posting.

Point is there potential to kill plants, good to go the extra mile to warn people.

Yes it there fault for not reading directions.

But your the moderator and give ALOT of advice to people, doesnt that mean you should be held to a higher standard?
Does it hurt to educate someone?

Can link to this thread. If you wanted to give someone a disclaimer about potential damage and not explain every single time you post about stylet oil.
hopefully someone read directions or at least does a search and finds this thread.
Thanks for the reminder of how important it is to share the details.

Good points, thank you.

Thinking on it, I do have this to add--the oil can burn even if you've followed all directions and applied during cool, darkness, etc. Again, this is a mixing issue, or rather failing to keep it mixed.

I have a large tank sprayer that goes on the back of the quadrunner. When I bought the sprayer I went ahead and got the tank mixer thingy, it's a set of valves that runs the mix back through the tank in a loop. Whenever I'm applying a large amount of anything with JMS in it, I keep this mixer going (gotta keep the quad running, it kills the battery). For those using something like one of those backpack sprayers or a rolling tank, I suggest opening it up and sticking the wand back in and running for a few minutes, as well as continually agitating.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of keeping the JMS mixed in solution. I cannot. Let me see if I can find the pic of the plant I burned so badly one year...

Yap, here we go. Applied in the evening, this was the last plant to get treated. I'd forgotten about mixing the tank again as I moved over to her. I guess I only took this one pic the next morning. She never grew back out of it.

In my opinion all is not lost. Cut off all the dead growth and give it a go to reveg her. Yes time consuming but so isnt starting with popping new beans.
