right,,figure sq footage and stick to plan,,did you also look into the char,,this would help alot also ,it will hold on to the magic and harder to leech it out if you dig,,what ever you do you need to get rocking were it can cook into the soil over winter,,with that gypsum i would also add sand to help break it up and plenty of compost,,build you a box around it were it want wash out on you,,as you said the rain fills it in,,this prevent it,,just any kind of barreir ,big rocks ,corragated steel, what ever to hold it in,,gypsum will breakup the clay and compost will provide nutrients, sand for air and drainage,,top it off with some real good soil and by the time you plant the second time,,you will have soil building vertically down if you dig,,best way i think is the jar trick,,i take a cup of water a tsp of dish washing soap, and a cup of the soil,,put in a mason jar,,shake that bitch up for a couple minutes,,sit it on a level place and come back 24 hr later,,you will see 3 layers in there,,sand on bottom, silt ,then clay,,get all 3 equal to each other or as close as you can,,those 3 bases are what you will build your soil from,,once you have that then you can amend all the goodies you want for what your planting,,the amends will go away but the base will always be there,,in that jar you will also see the water and above it will be all your compost ,perlite and such ,all that floats,,
or you could get sand and the gypsum,,work all that in and let it sit over winter to cook in ,i would also add some lime ,,but anyhow,,,about a month or so before you plan to plant,,get some bag soil and peatmoss amend it and let it sit like a month and cook,,do you plants and the next year you will have a looser soil base to work with,,me i only wont to do the shit once and would do the above,,i put compost on my stuff by seasons and that is the nutrients,,but you got to have a good base to start with
