nature doesn't renew the soil, merely it maintains the humus by recycling carbon based bio mass. no reason we all should not be doing the same. I never change my soil, I just try to not only produce food or meds, but also to produce humus and accumulate it. I think as producers we have a right to accumulate humus, in fact it should be the payment we make to the land for our use of it. Compost compost compost my boy! We are saving the planet over here, by taking carbon out of the oceans, out of the air, and putting it back in to the soil where it belongs.
It would be nice if society, always ready to moan, showed some commitment to this also by lobbying political classes to construct systems of rewards and check, where we encourage what are of course, some of the poorest workers on the planet, our farmers, to see the accumulation of humus as a benefit, via some carbon credit based system from which they can support themselves, their farms and families fairly for providing the single most vital industry to human survival, but also for reducing the harmful impacts of climate change.
As consumers, we ought really to make our choices based on those farmers engaged in regenerative practices and not who can supply it cheapest, although of course we all understand people have budgets, so I dont blame those seeking low cost food, but if we vote with our dollars, then the world will follow us.
We ought to instruct our politicians to instate policy that protects soil microbes, because if we lose this resource, and we are losing it, go look at any research on the state of wild glomus for example, we are losing access to our meds, and healthy food full of nutrition, and lord knows what else besides. We know certain pesticides, herbicides etc are not great for beneficial plant based soil microbes, so we ought to act to protect these just as we might a polar bear.
Inoculate your spaces, and return the lost glomus, if you want to save the world :) no joke its thats serious. Surely now the fires and floods and wind hitting the USA means you cant keep ignoring it.
keep you soil, build the humus, grow on and save the planet while you are at it. No need to replace bags of soil all the time, rather consolidate and rotate to squeeze the energy and value from it :)
