Here’s a dirt cheap method of cloning I’ve been using lately. I’ve retired my OXY Cloner and am using these propagation trays instead. I may make a separate post showing what I do step by step but here’s a quick rundown.
All components from the top going clockwise. Bottom tray, clear dome, 3d printed spacer, inner tray.
Close up of the bottom tray.
Close up of the dome lid.
Close up of the 3d printed spacer
Cloner fully assembled.
Inner tray numbered so I can keep track of my cuttings.
Clonex gel and rapid rooter plugs.
Prepared cutting dipped in
clonex. You can use a tool to rub the gel on the cutting, I just got lazy and dipped it.
Cutting in the inner tray ready to go.
I put about 1/4” of water in the bottom to provide moisture to them so the plugs don’t dry out completely.
All set to go. Now the waiting game begins. I’ve been getting 100% rooting in under 14 days. Some strains root in 3 days others take longer. Just depends on the strain.
No added heat is required and this just occupies a small section in my veg chamber.
The spacer was added so I could use taller cuttings but is not required if you take smaller cuts. You can also punch holes in the lid if you want and two of these occupy less space than the oxy cloner and doesn’t require any maintenance. Between each session I clean the trays in the sink with soap water and let them dry. Three of these occupy about the same space as my 20 site oxy cloner. So that’s 36 cuts for the same space. Not too shabby.
This all costs practically nothing to buy and use.
12 trays and domes were $14
Clonex Gel was $10-15 (and lasts forever)
Rapid rooter plugs were $20 for 50 of them
3d printed spacer cost $1 in materials
