Hi! Thanks for stopping by!

I'm Milson and I am growing the following five strains: Cheese (Seedsman), Chemdog (Nirvana), Kali China (Ace), Sweet Zombie (Expert), and Zamaldelica x Kali China (Ace). This is my second grow.

I am growing in three stages: my seedlings have started their lives in Jiffy peat pellets. They will graduate later this week to a coco coir/perlite mixture in a peat pot, where they will hang out while some space opens up for them to get into their final 3 gallon fabric pots. Those final pots will be grown like I grew my first grow: coco/perlite on top, nutrient rich soil forming a saturation zone on the bottom. I will be "cooking" the last pot for a couple weeks while they go through their other rounds. In general I try not to be very fussy about nutrients.

I am using a variety of organically derived nutrients from Roots Organics (Soul Pack) and others for most of the grow. In general, I am trying not to be too fussy about nutrients. Not trying to maximize my yield here. This is definitely quality/learning over quantity.

They will be under Viparspectra P1500s for primary light, with supplemental far red and UV.

This is a legal, medical tent grow in a condo.

Okay, that's the most tl;dr I could do! After this, it's going to get rambly!

Pics to follow later as well as detailed discussion of strain selection, growing method thoughts, my goals, etc. I want to keep this initial post short though.

So, yesterday got very busy and so I did not have time to sit down and ramble. That changes now!

Why these strains?

I have two major goals when it comes to my growing through the rest of this year.

The first is to continue to gain more experience with different strains. I am really trying to get an intuitive feel: I take out my plants to examine them pretty regularly. Although I am screwing up more by not following a regimented schedule or treating it like a science, that is really not what I want from this hobby. I can drop into Science Brain if I have to, and I often enjoy that aspect of tinkering (though nowhere near as much with the nutes as a lot of people on here, which is totally fine). But really this hobby is a chance to connect with the plants and coexist with them, even if ultimately I am making them mostly die vigins before I harvest their bodies for my own use lol.

As such, I am growing samplers fully aware that I am being inefficient. The plants will not get expressed to their peak. I will not have maximum yields. It's fine. This is personal use and for personal growth.

The second is to gain experience in strains that fulfill a variety of functions throughout the day. I very strongly believe that different strains have different effects (as do most people here I would imagine), and I want to develop a rough outline of the landscape of what is possible before I hone in on any one thing. The types of effects that interest me are:
  1. Pain relief: My father suffers from complications related to Parkinson's and scoliosis. Basically his brain shuts off part of his back muscles when he stands to the tune of a 70 degree spinal curvature to the left. This causes significant pain. He also has other symptoms from Parkinson's, of course, but those are mostly treated by a combination of Deep Brain Stimulation (bzzz in the head....such a blessing to have had that surgery work out in the last 2 years), and his existing drugs. However, he has used pot to manage his pain for a few years to varied success. I really want to learn all I can about pain management with cannabis for his symptoms, and also for myself. I take a medication for a blood clotting condition that means I can't take most anti-inflammatory medications. So my options for pain relief are Tylenol and...pot. I have chronic sciatic nerve pain stemming from some lower back issues. Hence my medical need to find strains and applications that work. Thank goodness getting a medical card wasn't too bad.
  2. Meditative: I have a strong interest in various meditative traditions. I love sitting on my back porch and watching the birds etc. These are the most "recreational" strains.
  3. Productivity: You know, more clear-headed, functional strains. My classic examples are Super Silver Haze or Durban.
  4. Depression/Anxiety: I am especially prone to SAD and I live in Chicago. So, you know. I do take other medication for my anxiety and it works for me.
Because of the aforementioned, I am also going to be exploring processing options along with my wife. Edibles, topicals, oils. I am inhaling all the info I can right now. Rosenthal, Cervantes, etc. I love book recommendations.

So, to the strain selection! I will proceed alphabetically.

Cheese
This is a classic Skunk descendant from England. I think a lot of people know that, but I thought I would get that out of the way first. By all accounts, it is well-loved there. It's a euphoric strain that strikes me as good for when the sun is going down too early but you don't want to feel mopey. Obviously pungent, and also seems to have some solid body relaxation/relief properties.

Given its lower THC content compared to some other strains, it was not on my radar at first, but I got some free seeds from Seedsman. After researching, my interest was piqued, and then @Dr.B mentioned how much he loved growing Seedsman strains, including a wonderful experience with Cheese. That counted for a lot in my decision-making process. I also smoked some other Skunk descendants that had lower THC but really packed a punch and realized I was thinking about the effects of pot like it was alcohol and that was dumb. It's a lot more complex than that.

Ultimately, I think this is the purest hybrid I will be growing, and I think I will really like it. The flowering time fits with everyone else, so it should be good!

(Strains it beat out include Black Widow, White Widow, Bruce Banger, SSOG from Crockett Family Farms, and Nepal Jam from Ace. Gosh, I have gotten a lot of free seeds. Black Widow is the only one of those I paid for and even that was like 20 bucks since they are regs from Nirvana....that was the toughest call for me.)

Chemdog
I have only a vague idea of why this is called Chemdog. It is a pheno of Sour Diesel x OG Kush, two supposed descendants of Chemdog, so I guess it should be kind of related...but still. Just seems confusing. Greenhouse Seeds came out with this a few years ago (at least), and it's a monster plant by all accounts. My understanding of how Greenhouse operates is very marketing centric with Arjan, so I suppose this was an experiment.

I think Nirvana just replicated it somehow, as the specs are the same in terms of yield, potency, etc. They must have some sort of relationship, because this is not the only strain like that. Or maybe Nirvana just jacks people's stuff. Whatever.

It should be huge yielding, very potent, and very good for pain relief. I really, really enjoy Sour Diesel and OG Kush strains that I have smoked, so this seems like a match made for me. Gives me some good experience, flowers just about on schedule, and just checks the boxes I want to check. @Beachwalker apparently has his eye on it too, and I tend to find what he grows interesting.

Plus Nirvana seeds are very inexpensive to my eye, so if this is good then I think I will become a regular customer. So far, the seeds look perfect (fresh, mature), and this girl popped no problem at all. So far, she is healthy.

Kali China
Ace seems really excited about this plant and so am I. It's one of their primary breeding blocks. An elite Chinese Yunnan hash plant crossed with old Kali Mist and bred for like 10 years into its current refined state. Sativa high with indica structure and the most complex terps in their catalog (so they say). People over at ICMag seem to really like it. I just think this seems like something I could never get at a dispensary and I like that. I also like how much breeding work has been put into it. Hopefully this will be a good, daytime, functional high that might have a little introspection to it too.

Sweet Zombie
This is courtesy of @sshz both on recommendation and his generous spirit. It falls squarely into the pain relief category. It's a mix of Black Domina (itself a mix of Afghani, Hash Plant, Ortega, and Northern Lights) and Zombie Virus (which seems to have basically come from mix packs....BOG Medley, Sour Bubble, Rainbow, an Afghani....it's a mashup). Basically, I consider this a crossroads of older school and newer school. I am going to grow this purely for a deep indica stone. Letting her go long....sshz recoommends 65+ days. I am going to aim to make it past week 9 and see where I am, but 10 weeks could happen if the plant allows.

Hopefully I get enough yield to mess with topicals and stuff from this bad girl. I am very interested in Black Domina based on a lot of old school people around here and elsewhere praising the strain for its sleep-inducing and pain-relief qualities.

Zamaldelica x Kali China
Another strain Ace is super excited about. I think @Dragonsflame might be growing some of this right now. Zamaldelica is a hybrid of a Sativa found on an island off Madagascar, Golden Tiger (Malawi x Thai) and another Thai if I am not mistaken. Again, it seems like it is gaining steam in the community. Dragonsflame seems to like it, lol. I am expecting a Haze competitor that provides a pleasant high. This plant, again, strikes me as something that i need to grow myself if I want to try it. So, here she is.

Summary
So basically, that is my reasoning behind the strain selection. Everyone is up and doing well, just very small. I am hoping to make it to 10 weeks with everyone, but the Kali China may prevent that. The indicas I am happy to let go long, but I want a functional buzz with the Kali China.

Pain relief: Sweet Zombie, Chemdog, kind of cheese.
Meditative: we will see how they all play.
Functional: Kali China, Zamaldelica x Kali China.

If you read all that you deserve a medal. I kind of feel narcisistic writing it all and sharing it. Normally this kind of stuff just goes into a notebook or a Google doc lol. But I am trying to be better about sharing and not trying to be perfect when I share. Plus I think this kind of post is what this forum is for. Or at least I hope.

When I can next sit down I will be talking about growing methods and all that fun stuff. Again, this is more for me than you, whoever you are reading this. Thank you for spending any time at all here. I appreciate it. This community has really helped me a lot. I have learned a lot here that could have practical benefit, but the vibes here are so much better than a lot of other pot communities that feel kind of skeezy in a bad way.

I appreciate you. <3 Good vibes....

Chemdog got its name from its particularly intense chemical/diesel smell. The LP I worked for had a version of that strain.

I've had my eye on Kali China for a minute! I like your approach.

I also think if you're into meditative strains, you should 100% grow out that Nepal Jam. It's descended from the same Nepal indica as USC's Nepalma, which is an anxiety assassin and perpetual keeper for me.

What kinds of bubble hash have you tried for your dad's back?

Zero. Dude he tried flower his brother grew, which was okay at best, and now 510 carts. He found a 1:1 cbd cart he likes and just stocked up on.

You best believe I am experimenting with bubble hash though. Just have to package it right for him. He hates being high lol but I think he really just hates "dirty" stones if that makes sense.

And yes, I plan to grow it out next year. I am limited to flowering five at a time legally, so I have to be choosy. If I have success, I will probably eventually start up a modest professional grow in Michigan with my wife and see what happens from there.

Absolutely. The reason that I've been gravitating towards hash is because the stone/high feels cleaner, especially at the right micron range, and the hashishene in the pressed stuff gears the effects more towards the body.

I love it. I'm planning to use one of those mini washing machine products with bags and then experiment with pressing it. From there I'm not really sure. I have experience with budder, dabs etc but not really hash. Kinda diving into this at terminal velocity after a long orbit, lol.

Milson......you need to consider making gummies. I have a great recipe and they are much better for pain/discomfort than smoking. I’ll put up a recipe in my thread. And you don’t have to bother with making hash.
Please do! We are going to be doing all things culinary. I bought my wife a levo 2 to play with and she keeps asking me when harvest will be.

Time to talk about growing pattern! Specifically light, because this is by far the most interesting topic to me.

Bugbee identifies 9 primary factors to consider when optimizing the environment for a plant. I don't remember them all, but the one he is most interested in is light. I think nutes are mostly solved, or at least 85%+ of the way there. CO2, temperature, and humidity are all very well studied. Air movement, yes. Oxygen at the root level, yes. Microorganisms in the soil is getting there.

In terms of light, there are four main factors I can identify: timing, intensity, direction of the source, and spectrum.

With regards to understanding the optimal spectrum, I am VERY interested in learning how the sun differs in various places and seasons, since plants seem to like the sun, more or less.

So this article, which is so cutting edge it's from the god damn future, is pretty interesting to me: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S016819232030143X

When I read this paper, and others on far red, I think I see a couple of things. First, I have a strong suspicion that we are underrating just how much far red tropical plants get. I think that has something to do with why things grow there so well (as opposed to trying to get similar solar intensity...I don't think it's just intensity at all). Two, far red sends signals to plants that they need to grow faster because they are in the shade via phytochrome. At least, that is what several papers from the 70s think.

So I am overindexing on far red if that possible. I am running 3 of these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/LED-Far-Red-700nm-Grow-Light-Kit-20-High-Efficiency-Initiator-Single-Light/133268554971?_trkparms=aid=111001&algo=REC.SEED&ao=1&asc=20160908105057&meid=3630999c8d304c5e85dbc3eca301abdd&pid=100675&rk=1&rkt=15&mehot=none&sd=133268554971&itm=133268554971&pmt=1&noa=1&pg=2380057&brand=Unbranded&_trksid=p2380057.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci:d6979178-dc16-11ea-bcb2-74dbd1809341|parentrq:df5a99791730a9e53846888fffffe4e4|iid:1

That is quite a bit of far red as far as I can tell. Almost 100 diodes where before I was using like 6 in my P1500. Like 16 watts worth. This will be an interesting experiment.

I will also do more experimentation with UV, perhaps from a relatively early age, because I am convinced it has something to do with terpenes in not just pot but plants generally.

This is a good video on far red:

Herijuana by Sannie is another strain you need to consider for the future......... I have a very early thread on it somewhere, maybe 15 years ago, if it’s still alive.

Here is my 1 line description........

Effects: 100% body, heavy, narcotic, will turn you into JELLY”

Interesting! I feel like I have seen that stuff at a dispensary....I will have to check it out. And ya, one for the grow list.
