My opinion is the soil gets more exposure to air so a bit better gas exchange. Air pruning roots basically signals the root to grow in a different direction. The pruning itself doesn't do anything beneficial IMO.
whether roots circle the pot and stop growing or are “air pruned” lol (should say killed off by dryness) does not matter unless killing them off at the ends is bad for the plant imo.
